Red face Sludge with Video!!

Hi everyone, I just wanted to make sure this is normal for our cars. I have just had a bad feeling ever since I took my car to a non euro/bmw place for an oil change (was living in the dorms otherwise I would have done it myself).

So tonight I decided I would take my oil cap off and take a little look.

2006 BMW 330i, 83k miles, Auto, moly whatever was used at the last oil change. Around 6k miles ago, I will be getting an oil change soon.

Does this look normal?? Thanks everyone, I know a little smoke is normal, is was more concerned about the sludgey looking stuff.

You're in good shape. No sludge there. Do always use BMW 5W-30 no matter who does the oil change. Alderson only charges about $90 for an oil change. Not a bad price for a dealership.

It's within the normal range. An engine with more frequent oil changes and not used for short trips would look almost brand new inside the valve cover. More stop and go would result in more varnish as would less frequent oil changes.

You don't have any 'sludge'. I see nothing there which would indicate a problem. The crud deposit on the inside of the oil filler cap is due to the cap being the coolest part of the engine during shut off and therefore it tends to condense vapors.

Yup. 75k highway miles with 7500 mile changes, and mine looks about the same as the day it was delivered.

It only gets BMW synthetic. You can pick it up at the dealer, or occasionally get a great deal at a group meeting of other BMW owners, none of whom apparently change their own oil. The deal may be even better if Professor Cook isn't bidding you up.

Thank you all so much, I ordered a kit online to change the oil next weekend

So you guys don't think an engine flush is required?

Thank you!

Zooks, you still paid way under wholesale price for that oil!
(Thanks Prof!)

And for a good cause !

I remain stunned that in a collection of +/- 20 BMW drivers, I was the only one interested in it. I was prepared for a bidding war. Ultimately got into a minor one over one of the girly items.

Not necessarily so, I just knew it couldn't go in carry on luggage.

I can't believe DSX deliberately excluded me from that item by bringing the wrong oil. Just another example of the daily insult and prejudice faced by M3 drivers.

Here is a picture of the auctioneer:

Bull...you know you hosed the Ford fella. I actually can't decide which was more insulting, the Lexus bag, or the final bid price for the synthetic. Good thing it's it was all for a good cause.

About a month ago I got a great spring special oil change at the dealer, 79.99

Nah, $80 for 12 quarts is $6.67 / quart for BMW synthetic. Good cause or not, that's less than I pay at either the dealer or online, and doesn't include a cut for the state or UPS on top of it. If you know where it's regularly available cheaper, I'd love to know!

And I thought the Lexus award was totally in keeping with the event. I have it posted in my office next to my ED plate.

But, but, being referred to as "the Ford fella", that just cuts to the quick!

I would have bought the oil, but I had just purchased a case of it myself and figured it'd be a while before I got through the case I have to get to the new one.

The auction was a riot.
