Transmission Problems or Electrical Problems

I Have a 2001 BMW 525i with an Automatic Transmission with Manuel override.Normally it looks like PRND When ever you override the Transmission it turns into PRND5 until you shift out then it will show the gear... Lately while driving the 5 will randomly show up and start flashing sporadicallyand even does this while in Park and Reverse .... Any ideas on what will cause this???
