Question for manual F30 drivers

When do you shift out of first? It seems like a remarkably short gear which is why I ask. If you're at a red light, have you shifted by the time you're at the middle of the intersection or upon passing it?

Feels this way with the 8AT in manual mode too. At least with the manual you can get smooth shifts. Just drove another BMW with the 8 AT (sister is looking at getting a 3rd BMW...man that transmission is rough shifting).

To each his own. Driven 6 3 series, two X3s and an X1 with it. To me it's rough and always feels lost and hunting to me. Really not enjoyable in my experience with it.

VW/Audi DSG shifts lightning quick and you don't get the body rock/hesitation I feel in the 8 AT BMW. Of course on Audi/VW's application, the throttle/engagement is always really slow on take-off with DSG. Brutally slow, as if you're in a car with a slipping clutch.

Haven't tried porsche's dual clutch tranny but I'm willing to bet it feels better too.

I think what drives me nuts on the 8AT in BMWs is that I'm always feeling it shift. Constantly. It's like the logic is always trying to get to the "right" gear and never holding any gears.

If you shift after passing the intersection, you will be at 4-5 to even 6k rpm. I tend to shift in the middle of the intersection on average. If I am turning at an intersection and there are people behind me, I'll probably keep it in 1st.

Transmission preferences are very subjective - or as the Romans said, "De gustibus non est disputandum" (meaning "In matters of taste, there can be no dispute"). I believe that the BMW 6MT and Steptronic have have incredibly short first gears. First gear on the Getrag 7-speed dual-clutch transmissions is much more to my liking. Of course, I don't like the mushy manuals on BMWs anyways. I like the Tremec trannies found on Mustangs and Corvettes better (and I hate them). The buttery smooth, "snick-snick", 6 speed transmission on my Honda S2000 feels like working the action on a bolt-action rifle and is perfect.

I love Honda/Acura's snick-snick shifting and a light clutch.
However a short shift kit can be a huge improvement for BMW's 6MT, heck even a shorter weighted shift knob makes a big difference.
I haven't driven a new F30 with AT, so I can't comment on it. I suspect BMW made it rough on purpose to give a sporty feel and avoid CVT-type feeling of an accelerating train.

I put Honda's Titanium shift knob on my S2000 and the added heft made a great shifter even better.

When I sold my S2000 I took my titanium shift knob off the car and the buyer got the stock aluminum one. The titanium knob is polished almost to a mirror finish. I'm keeping it as a memento!

OP: why would you measure how far across an intersection you are before you shift? You shift by what RPM you're at, not by some arbitrary measure of distance.

I realize that, I was just trying to get an idea. If I'm not trying to do a jackrabbit start, I shift at a lower RPM but found it odd that I can barely make it into the intersection before I have to shift into 2nd. Also, there is a wide range of RPMs that you can shift at, depending on your driving habits.

I generally shift out of 1st pretty early (3,500 or so) as it is a really short gear. The motor has more than enough torque down low to be able to handle most low speed driving tasks in 2nd gear.

I have experienced the super short 1st. Most of the time during normal driving I skip second and go to 3rd. If I punch it off the line I'll hit second.

On a related note. Does anyone else want them to stick the shift indicator on the HUD? When my music is blaring the indicator is helpful given I have trouble "feeling" the motor.

I think I've come to terms with riding it to 2.5k-3k RPMs, even though it sounds like it's straining. There's just no other way unless you're content with creeping out of every light or stop sign. On another note, does anyone have trouble avoiding the jerk from 1st to 2nd in sport mode? Never happens in comfort or eco, but I can't seem to match the RPMs on a consistent basis when I'm in sport.

I'm pretty sure even the slushbox would shift well past that. It's not straining.

Does anyone know the top speed in 1st gear? Curious if it really is geared short. The M Coupe and my old E36 M3 were both 'short' for BMWs. I wouldn't be surprised if, theoretically, the 4cyl was even shorter; OTOH the huge torque would mean it could stand to be even taller than an NA 6.
