Mein Auto: Looking for a new car!
Road and Wind Noise At Speed

I am looking to purchase a new 2013 335i BMW through the Military Purchase Program later this year but because I am overseas in sand land I have not had the opportunity to do a lot of test driving with the new vehicles. I read one review mentioning that the new F30 has quite a bit of road and wind noise at speed for this class of car and I was wondering if any current F30 owners could comment on this.

I have a 12 328 and I don't find the road or wind noise to be excessive at all, it is a very quite car. I drive in Germany so I am usually cruising at 130km (81mph) and there is little noise. When I get really moving, in the 100mph+ range the wind noise does get a good bit louder but not what I would consider unreasonably loud.

Many people with their first ride in my new 2012 328I have their first comment of "this car is quiet". Joe..

This car is really quiet so much so that when we first took delivery and driving on the freeway, the most obtrusive sound was from the cabin blower. When the cabin temp was reached, even that sound of air blowing diminished. But then again, my only comparisons are the E46 and E53 that I drive, so can't say how it compares with other models...it's only a 3'er, not a 7 series

The only time I noticed any wind noise was when I hadn't completely closed the sunroof, leaving it open just a crack, otherwise the car was very quite.

The car is very quiet to me, even at 80 mph cruise. I have test driven one unit (a 2012 328i sport) that had really bad wind noise emanating from the driver side A-pillar. I suspected that perhaps a door mirror cap or something similar was causing air turbulence.

I have not experienced this problem with my vehicle.

Can't imagine F30 would have degraded acoustics re: E9x....

Even with my top down I can easily have a conversation. Heck, the needle was passing 130 mph yet I could still hear wifey hysterically shouting at me to slow down as she pounded my right shoulder - and, yup, top down!

You need a comparison you have test driven to get a good sense. There are individuals who will complain about wind/road noise in a 5-series and those will won't notice it in a honda civic.

If you own an e46, you will notice less wind/road noise than in an f30. if you own an e90, you might notice about the same or even slightly more road noise in a new 3-series.

Owning an E90 and having driven and F30 328 and 335 extensively, I'd say the F30 is slightly louder from a road noise standpoint (I have Pilot Super Sports on my car, which are noisier than both Bridgestone RE050s and PS2s). The F30s are still quieter than my friend's A4 2.0T (with Goodyear Assurance tires)

As others have indicated, it really depends on what you are comparing it to. It's much quieter than my '02 Infiniti G35. I wouldn't want it to be too quiet, though -- I'd feel too isolated from the road.

I had one as a loaner over the weekend and did not notice any excessive or intrusive wind noise. I thought it was very quiet.

My car is very quiet, much quieter than my E90.

We'd read some early reports last year of some improperly installed window trim, it's resolved now.

Didn't you have an e90 convertible? You think that might impact your assessment?

Also, tire choices and tire status...

The f30 is larger and lighter than the e90. And the e90 used more aluminum. Where did that weight savings come from? Some of it came from sound deadening removal in the f30.

It's still a great, quiet ride in it's class. But some people expect it to be lexus-quiet, and it's not, and it's not meant to be.

I don't think this statement is accurate. Weight loss came from a variety of things, one of them being a slightly different alloy used for the side and rear steel. I'm not saying I know emphatically they didn't remove sound deadening, but suggesting they MUST have removed some seems pretty illogical. Did you read that they removed some? I would be interested in the article.

Coming from an E61, there is definitely more road noise, but its certainly not terrible. Usually, its the tires that is the reason...

Test drove the F30 several times and each vehicle was quiet. My current cars are Honda; and road noise is the major complaint for most owners. So it depends on what you are use to in terms of road noise. Wind noise sounds like a different issue that may have been the specific car you drove. I think the type of tires make road noise better or worse; so not sure what tires were on the car you drove.

Drove two on the freeway at 70 at the Team USA event, and thought the noise levels were objectionable. Both wind and road noise. I have an E60, though.

On long drives, this would be more fatiguing.

Sorry I just came from a 2010 E60 to a 2012 335i Sport and came back from a round trip to Fla. 3,000 + miles and didn't find it to be "fatiguing" IMO the car is pretty quite.
cheers

In the test drive I took, I was struck by the quietness of the F30. I couldn't hear the engine at all unless I really put my foot into the throttle. I don't find my E90 to be at all loud but the newer car is even less so.

Maybe they made improvements or added sound insulation over the past couple months.

How quiet is quiet? I feel my car is quiet enough for me but not that quiet that I can't hear that nice tone of the exhaust.

I've been driving a rental 328i around for a week now (Hertz, upgrade from full size for some reason) and in general cruising the car seems quiet. Any sort of irregular surface, though, and it's suddenly quite noisy. I have an E90 convertible and I would say at normal cruise the F30 is quieter but it transmits more humming and booming on irregular surfaces. Odd. Maybe higher frequency sounds or lower frequency sounds transmit into the cabin more easily or something. The car has 2,000 miles on it and was registered in August, so it's pretty new (manufactured in late spring/early summer?)
