Is the look of the E92 outdated

Hi guys,

Just curious what your thoughts are on this as I'm going thru this current decision.

I'm wanting to get the 335is coupe but was really thinking about it over the weekend and starting to see an older body feel to the car after looking at the F30's. Part of me doesn't like the look of the F30 sedan, the back end doesn't seem very sporty. Usually it takes me some time to like a new bodystyle though.

So, maybe I thought asking here might bring up some thoughts that I haven't yet thought of. I really want the DCT as I fell in love with it after test driving it. If I get the F30, I realize I have to give that up. What I'm afraid of is owning the car for a year and then have the feeling of already owning an older car with a newer body style coming out.

Thoughts?

Some things stay attractive. I still like the '73 Mustang and the '78 - '82 Corvette.

I like the look of my E92, and I'm not thinking of moving out of it for a while. May become an issue as the miles roll up, but isn't now.

FWIW,
George

I weep for your sensibilities, Zookie.

70's+ Corvettes are an overly dramatic femanization of red blooded American masculinity.

The pinnacle of design, sir, was the '67 Sting Ray. That cannot be denied.

I think the E92 is a beautiful car and doesn't look dated at all. I think most people will not be able to tell the difference between the E92 and the F? (whatever they are going to call the coupe). If you can hold on for another year you will be able to get into the new coupe.

Hell, with the exception of the hood from the 2006 to the newer model years (let alone F30) I can't tell the difference unless they are side by side. And I don't fall under the category of "most people" considering my love of this brand and the amount of time I spend looking at and enjoying the rides.

@OP - These cars were designed well and look elegant, however, it's your emotions and your money. If you think it will bother you then hold off. If your concern is society, the only person who may care is BJ

But you'll run into that with a new F32, because in four years after its release the LCI update will come out and you'll have the "dated look" issue again.

Besides, like rdkind said, the vast majority of people likely won't be able to tell the E92 from the F32. All indications are that BMW is going for an incremental change here, not an evolutionary one like E46 -> E92 (and many people still like -- if not outright prefer -- the E46).

The 2009 E90 Sedan LCI refresh was certainly not eclipsed by the F30 and we decided to put off a planned update til the stop / start etc nonsense is resolved.

Don't know what the F32 will look like ..... no doubt a beauty ..... but so is the E92 and it won't turn into Cinderella .....

I'm in an x1 now while my car is being looked at (can not reproduce ), and sometimes you'd never know it was starting and stopping but most of the time when it starts back up it jerks like when you let go of a lawn mower and the thing has a somewhat violent shake... Not something I like.

I recently purchased a new e92 and love the look. But I also love the e42 coupe...I would have both if my garage was big enough.

I think BMWs age more gracefully than most cars so I wasn't too concerned with the new 4 series coming out next year.

Personally, I just didn't like f30. Interior is too busy and cheap...IMHO. Ultimately, this is a very personal decision only you can make...good luck.

The E9x is still a good looking car. Just look at the number of 'clones' the other manufactures are producing based on the E9x's lines.

I have a 2007 E92XI and drove an 2012 X-3 today as a loaner. The inside was really cheap feeling compared to my 2007 with maple instead of plastic. I know the diff. between a coupe and an suv but the feeling was different. It did not really feel like a BMW I was more than disappointed. I would not buy the 2012 if I had been shopping for an suv.

I still love my E92 and will for a while I hope, it is my first but not my last......

Unless you lease the car or can afford the keep buying a new car every 4 years, something newer and better will keep coming out. Myself I buy what fits the budget, and what fits my life style at the time. I have no desire to keep up with the latest trends (that's all new things/ cars are). To me the E46 still looks great and is not all that dated looking (some will not have blue tooth, i-drive and the other tech toys new cars have). If you need the latest and greatest wait another year, or look at other makes M-benz, Acura etc have newer product lines out compared to the E9x line.

Good Lord. Take your pick. Lexus Design is a much more consistant, organic whole for those concerned with looks.

Whatever you choose, DO eliminate the gap between the wheels and wheel arch! Lower your ride as the first order of business - your look will greatly exceed showroom appearance.

The E92 was a beautiful car, a breakthru in design and style, but that was 2006 and it's 2013.

Buying a car that's at the very end of a 7 year lifecycle is not what you want to do on many levels, the main one being that you'll have no experience of that "new car" feeling because come spring you're going to be seeing the F32 in the flesh and then on the roads. No one buys a 'new' used car, if you will. Like it or not, BMW's are status symbols, and nothing has less status than a 7 year old design. They still make brand new Members Only jackets; no one buys them.

You'll also feel in Year 2 and Year 3 what I call the "Bar Mitzvah" syndrome where every 18 year old with a new license wants to take his summer job money and buy a used, 10 year old E92, and you'll find yourself in a $50,000 car that your babysitter's boyfriend owns. It's not a pleasant feeling.

Two choices:

If you want a coupe, you need to trust that BMW is going to release a successor to the E92 that's better looking than the original. They always do. Wait it out a few more months.

If you want a sedan, look no further than the F30 as it's phenomenal on many levels, just now starting to hit the streets in number, feels and looks like a brand new car.

BJ

This is just BJ's online persona... As you can see here, he gets a kick out of tweaking people with BMW "status" posts.

A thread with BJ participating is often one of the more interesting to observe.

Should have figured that out when I noticed he listed his 328 is a "Luxury Sedan". For some reason he left out “Entry Level”

I think it's pretty annoying that everyone has "my" car now. Back in 08 when i had my barbera red coupe it was pretty legit. Not necessarily teenage boys but also middle aged women. Although the teenage boys are definitely more annoying cause you know they all have the coolguy thing going. My new '11 is an LCI but i have to admit can't wait to get out of it (assuming the F32 isnt a disaster), one of the reasons is the bar mitzvah syndrome.

"bar mitzvah syndrome"? I thought boys do the bar mitzvah thing when they are 13?

Where I live, the high school parking lot is full of "new" BMWs and Audis. But, who gives a rats behind if younger people also like BMWs - like that's somehow beneath you? If you care so much that they are driving the same car as you, then I'd say you have to up your game beyond getting an F32.

This Bar Mitzvah thing reminded me of a recent encounter I had with a guy whose son used to be on my Little League baseball team about 14 years ago.

I was walking my dog at the park and he drives up in a spanking new Audi S4 and parks near to where I parked my '01 Suburban. He was a total upitty so and so when I coached his kid and he had not changed much over the years. So, he sees me walking to my car and calls out to say hello. I go over and compliment him on his new car and ask how he likes it. He starts giving me the how exclusive it is and was obviously dying to say how much it cost because it is such an "expensive car". So, I say to him that I really liked the car too, and that's why I got one for my daughter as a college graduation gift.

The guy almost swallows his tongue on the spot, and when he gained his composure, he asked..."well, what are you driving then?" I said that I'm driving the Suburban over there and left it at that.

When I coached youth soccer and baseball, I never drove any of my fun cars and always had an SUV for the games and practices. That way, the parents could just hate me for being the coach and not out of jealousy as well!
