Mein Auto: 2013 X1 sDrive28i
Pulled the trigger, now the waiting

Today I ordered my X1. I am working with one of the forum sponsors (full report to follow when the car comes, but all positive so far) who was kind enough to run a search for the configuration I wanted. He got close but not quite and recommended that if I wasn't in a hurry to order one. He had an allocation spot for the end of this week so I grabbed that. If all goes well the car will be here around Thanksgiving. I'm paying $500 over invoice which amounts to about $2,000 off MSRP. I thought that was great given the newness of the car in the US market and the fact that I'm not a BMW owner and can't get any of the other incentives.

I'm getting the sDrive28i in Alpine White, black leather interior, Ultimate package, and the sport paddle shifting wheel. Originally I was going to go with a very stock car to keep the price down. But I'm buying and will keep the car for a long time so a few thousand here or there in the long run doesn't matter that much. I wanted the moonroof and that is a good chunk of the cost of the premium package. Then if you are getting that and the Tech package you might as well step up to the ultimate because you essentially are getting the Driver Assist stuff for free. To be sure there is a bunch of stuff in the Ultimate package that I don't really need. If I could have cherry picked things as options I would have done that.

I thought long and hard about the HK audio option. I'm an audiophile and I am willing to spend the money on good sound. Heck, I would have bought the Acura TSX wagon if it had driven worth a darn simply because it has an amazing stereo in it. At the end of the day I stuck with the basic stereo, albeit with the Tech package to get iDrive and the navigation screen for display, and down the road I'll spend that money on an upgrade from the Bavarian Soundwerks folks.

I never drove the 35i because it was quite a bit more expensive and I did not want to be tempted. Plus I really wanted the 8 speed gear box and the better fuel economy. I'm coming from a 146HP Honda so I'm thinking that 241HP plus all that torque will be enough to keep me happy.

The various lines did not seem to bring anything I wanted so I passed on them. M Sport I considered but I did not want to make the ride too sporty/harsh. I would have gone for the exclusive blue in the M Sport package if it had been a regular color choice. It looks gorgeous.

Speaking of colors I went with basic white first because it saved me money, but I considered a few other colors including the orange. My wife ruined that color though because when I showed it to her she said "Looks like the Dukes of Hazard". Valencia Orange is now Dukes of Bavaria in our household. At any rate the look of the car in white has grown on me and I do not feel like I am compromising on it to save some money.

Further details plus photos when the car arrives.

great price! if you're coming off a 146hp car you're going to be truly impressed when you pull out into traffic and have to hammer the little N20 engine..... once the turbo spools you get shoved into the seat... gives me a big smile every time!

Already thinking about having that extra power every time I have to merge into traffic....

I'm trying not to be too excited because the car is, as far as I know, still sitting in Bremerhaven. A ship to the west coast left there this weekend. If the car missed that one it appears the next departure is not for two weeks. Possible then that the car won't even hit port in the USA until mid November.

Did you really avoid driving the 35i because of not wanting to be tempted? Or are you really trying to keep costs in check?

Sorry, the 35i is just the better power train option...period. I would have compromised on some other techie options before I checked the 28i first.

I just went through the same process, but I drove them all. 1's, 3's, X1's, X3's and no matter what I drove it had to have the six cylinder. In a BMW there is just no compromise.

Seems silly to not test drive something just because you know it might sway you. Head back to the dealer and grab they keys!

Just my humble opinion!

The price of the 35i with the options I really wanted works out to be over $4,000 more than the 28i. That is a lot more considering I originally wasn't going to spend over $30,000. And even then I'm getting more equipment on my 28i. If I equip them equally then the difference is closer to $7K. When I'm already stretching my budget to get to the 28i X1 suggesting that I push the budget out beyond $40,000 isn't going to fly. I'd love to have a brand new 550i Gran Turismo but price wise it is out of reach for me so I'm not going to waste a dealer's time test driving it. The 35i X1 is in that same category.

The mileage the 28i offers helps too plus I like that it is RWD and that I'm not carrying the weight of the xdrive system. I've got on demand AWD now and it is likely it has turned on perhaps 10 times all the years I've owned my Honda.

I did compare the X1 to a CPO 3 series wagon with the older 6 in it. I preferred the new turbo 4 given the kind of driving I am going to be doing. Horses for courses. If I had decided I had to have the 6 I'd be buying a CPO 3 series wagon, not the X1.

At the end of the day realistically even the 28i has more engine than I need. Given the realities of speed limits and traffic congestion I'm more interested in a car that is reasonably quick 0-60 with good handling. I'm willing to pay over my original budget to get 40HP more than any of the competition in the class. The extra 60HP of the 35i is not worth the price to me. I certainly can see how it is to some folks and I'm glad BMW put that engine out there.

I bet at the end of the day I'm going to be enjoying my sDrive28i just as much as the rest of you enjoy your xDrive35i versions. But I promise I'll report back and let you know if I regret my choice in the long run.

One other thought. I'm buying because I aim to own the car for a long time. If I was leasing then the price difference becomes less significant. If you are leasing then I agree, you should cross shop the two engines in the X1. I would have looked at the X3 then as well as waiting to see the new 2013 3 series wagons.

Ok, sounds like you did your research.

One more fly in the ointment for you....is this your first BMW? I'm glad you are in it for the long haul (buying, not leasing) but first year BMW's are notorious for being buggy. I learned my lesson many years ago and will never, ever be a test pilot for a first year anything.

Just one more thing to contemplate....

This isnt a "first year". It has been out in the rest of the world for several years: 2009.

As the other poster notes it has been sold in most of the rest of the world for several years. But I agree 100% with the general idea. Never buy the first model year.

It is my first BMW and I know I'll have to be looking at how to handle maintenance once the free years are up. If it has been problematic I might have to change my strategy and think about replacing it sooner than expected rather than paying the costs myself. Of course that is always a crap shoot. You can get a bad/lemon of any brand. All you can do is try to avoid brands that are notorious for it.

This car looks great in Alpine White- I think all the X's do. Good choice, even if it was just to save money. Best of luck with it.

My car is on the way on board the NYK Line ship Triton Leader due into port here in California on November 6. Allowing for a week from port to dealer that will put the wait time at exactly 8 weeks from when the car went into production.
