Cool Interior roofing

So I'm refurbing the interior on my '99 528i. I'm looking for the interior carpet roof, not sure what's its called, head liner I think. Ive googled around and have not been able to find one. Is that somthing I can just buy and install myself or do I need to get a professional to fabricate and install one?

Thanks again guys,
-Josh

Josh...
I've done a few different cars. Not just BMW, but Volvo, chevy etc. If you have minimal technical experience you can pull it of yourself. Most recently I did my Silverado, my beater truck that protects my BMW from the NW Ohio winters.

Here is a link to that video.

Couple of things to be aware of...
You can use whatever material you want to cover the headliner with. But, I will advise this be conservative, get a fuzzy or suede, I prefer 'fuzzy' almost like a thin blanket material from a fabric store, and don't go with a vivid pattern, either a subtle or no pattern works well. I always like to recommend black because that will work with any interior.

Next your A pillars and C pillars can be covered with the same material if you want...be aware of the airbags and the connections! If you decide to do the A pillars...

When you pull your old material off you can use it as a pattern. to rough it in, don't cut to close to the original ...leave yourself some space.

After the material is in place then work the edges and trim off excesses. Then cut any holes you have to for the sunroof, and overhead console etc...

Doing a headliner is very easy and very rewarding. Take your time and use good adhesive...

Good Luck

Is your original headliner damaged?

I'd venture the dealer can get you that. They're a bulky part so shipping would otherwise probably cancel out any savings you might get going aftermarket or online.

Here's a DIY for an e38 with lots of pics. I think there's one step ... probably removing the rear clips on the sunroof .... that's different. (Haven't done it myself....)

If I were going after a genuine headliner, I might try a salvage-yard source first. These things are not cheap.

If you want to check with your dealer, here's the realoem link showing all the stuff up there in addition to the headliner itself. (Click on the illustrations for part #s.)
