For the current M5, I have seen published 0-60 times ranging from 3.6 to 4.6 seconds and published quarter mile times ranging from 11.7 to 12.9 seconds. Everyone always quotes the fastest times and slams anyone who measures a slower time. I wonder why that happens.

4.5 is faster than you ever need outside the drag strip and as I understand this car pulls as if it has afterburners lit from pretty much any speed you will encounter on and off the track. Speed and power is not an issue with it. Weight, chassi reactions and raw feedback is where I guess I will have some issues with it once I get my hands on it. It looks great in white btw.

I can't recall well; but is your M3 a convertible?

ps I think I'm mistaken; yours was a F10 which turned out to be a lemon and an exchange was made for the M3. Your wife's V6 Cayenne will have no probs with Weight, chassi reactions and raw feedback.

I wouldn't quote fastestlaps, they knowingly omit official times and yet include "claims". It's quite a joke of a site. Perfect example, they won't allow Corvettes numbers- someone there feels GM's bankruptcy should preclude them or something. Stick to wiki...

I impressed by Chevy Camaro ZL1 being recorded at 7:41.27 which is listed on both fastestlaps and Wiki, but F10 M5's 7:55 is only listed on fastestlaps.

Sorry, but FL has lost all credibility in the racing community by disregarding all recent Corvette entries. GM has gone out of its way to validate their claims, unlike most other manufacturers. It's hard to trust anything they print now....

I'm sure the M5 is a luxury missile but it's not what I personally would spend 100k on. Maybe if I commuted 100 miles+ daily on Autobahn, maybe. Personally I would only spend 100k and up on sports car in the shape of a sedan or coupe.

No. To me it's not a sports car, to big and heavy and compromised by it's dual duty as a comfortable daily luxury car. It seems like a GT car.
I have not driven it though, maybe it does have the unfiltered, raw, agile and scalpel like precision attributes of a great sports car. If it has the M division has done some serious magic with the F10. It's not impossible but it's not what I've read in the reviews so far.

That said, I do understand that for many like Stealth it's close to the perfect car and a dream come true. It's just that my dream cars have never been luxury comfort cars it's been sports cars from Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo and the likes. I can appreciate a good compromise and gladly buy one but if I'm going into the six figures it will only be for a "dream car". The new M5 seems to be one heck of a car though so congrats to the new owners here!

ps why did you purchase the F10 previously, and not the M3 or other cars like a Porsche, (used) Ferrari/Porsche/Lambo etc? Did you own an E60 before the F10?

First, if you think lap times on the ring have any meaning to how I rate a car you've misunderstood pretty much everything.

Second, I need 4 doors and don't buy used cars. I don't trust them and for me personally there is high value and satisfaction in taking delivery of a new car and knowing everything about the cars history. My target was mid-size sedans and BMW made the best available and it used to be "sporty" enough. The F10 might still be best in biz but it's no longer sporty enough, hence I needed to drop one size. I'm glad I did, the E90 M3 is very good. The M5 might be a sporty enough compromise but at $100k+ it's no longer enough. At that price I want a true sports car not a compromise.

Have often wondered if the m5 acceleration is compromised by not having xdrive. I have seen 0-60 of 4.5s for the 550 xdrive which seems feasible although maybe optimistic. It is certainly sub 4.9s....have to think the M pulls over .5s faster.

That launch looks compromised. The surface isn't great looking for traction.

Either way, I haven yet heard of anyone complaining that the M5 is slow.

It's a lot quicker than 4.5. I was getting 4.2 in my 550 Dinan S2, and the M5 feels like it launches much quicker than the 550 DinanS2.

Either way, it's a useless metric anyway. I hardly ever floor the accelerator from standstill. For me the fun is cornering and passing, not drag racing.

True cornering and passing are important, but for some drivers 0-60 is very practical and often used capability. I very much enjoy my car's 3.8 sec consistent and non-dramatic acceleration. First to the merge has a view of the open road, the rest stare at tailights.

Honestly, the 550xi D2 is such a sleeper. If I saw a non-M F10 on the street, I wouldn't expect that kind of performance. Forced induction is only going to get better

Just imagine an M5x; people will start to look at 3.6 as being slow.

Yup, Insideline is pretty slow, but not the slowest: BMW's ballistic M5 tested

Magazine numbers (whether online or print) can rarely be trusted implicitly. Not only are there myriad variables that directly impact the results, some of the magazines "correct" the raw results to supposedly account for these variables.

Whether the actual number is X or X+.1 or X+.2 etc is somewhat moot - a car either feels fast or it doesn't. The proverbial butt dyno and the size of the grin induced by the vehicle in question are probably the two most relevant test instruments.
