Extended Warranty Purchase - or No?

OK - lots of good info on this forum with respect to this topic. Lots of emotion as well. Kind of funny actually. But regardless, clearly people have opinions going both ways in regards to warranties. To each is own.

With that being said, I typically have always preferred to be covered by a warranty - it does establish a "peace of mind" for me. Tomorrow I am picking up a 2007 750i Sport with almost 59k on the odometer. I have called Carchex and spoken to a rep on the phone who was well versed on this topic - especially the BMW 7-series.

He offered two types of warranties.

Option 1.) Platinum warranty which was what he called "Bumper to Bumper" coverage for 4yrs or up to 100k on the odometer. This was in the $3700 +/- range if I recall correctly.

Option 2.) Powertrain Choice Coverage - this is what it states basically. Covers powertrain, AC & heating, Cooling, fuel, electrical and switches. This would be 5yrs and an additional 100k -- so up to approx 159k. This was in the $2,900 range.

Now between the two - me personally I think I would lean towards the 2nd option as I'll get a LOT more mileage out of it and an additional year.

Now I'm unbiased here - so I'm looking for some people's inputs as to value percieved. Typically WHAT goes wrong on these cars? I've heard about these coolant pipe issues - but is that more towards 02-05 745's? Or does that continue into the 750's as well?

Any and all info is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.....

I have platinum. They've paid more than I will ever pay them and I have 3.5 years to go. Very good buy.

Wow - you've had a LOT of work done.

My concern with the Platinum - they are offering me essentially a 4yr/40k warranty. If I keep the car that long, I will absolutely pass the allotted 40k miles. I do approx 15k per year.

One repair on bumper to bumper and it should pay for itself. It's a tough call, then again my mechanic say 2006 and newer had better engineering.

They approved new tranny and eccentric shaft once fault codes arrive. Around 10k approved lol.

Have you had any major issues? They both seem good but option 2 for the mileage might be best for you.

I haven't had any issues at all. Literally just bought the car and picked it up this morning. Wanted to get people's opinions on the need for a warranty and what type off warranty is best for these cars.

What if any stipulations are there regarding your responsibility to service the car as determined in the owners handbook? I have heard that some policies use this ploy vigorously to avoid payment.

They haven't asked me for that, however they can and will use it to get out especially on a major repair. I make sure that I have my oil changed and keep the records every 6 months or 5000 miles. I also had the recent 90,000 mile service done. They have forked out over $4,000 this year, I'm sure once my tranny goes out they will request the service records.
