Navigation issues?
My navigation stopped working after recent work that required the battery to be disconnected. Now the radio only stays on for a few minutes. Is there a way to reboot the Naviation unit?

Unfortunately you will need to replace the Nav unit. I had the same problem and it took a couple of years
to discover the root of the problem. The bottom line- Nav units installed in 2001 E38s must power down completely before disconnecting the battery. This takes about 15 minutes. If the battery is disconnected before the unit shuts down, the unit will be damaged and inoperable. BMW issued a service notification on this back in 2002 or 03, can't remember exactly but you can search the net for it. I would suggest browsing Ebay for a replacement, it will cost you about $500 to $600. Good luck. |

Agreed - the Nav needs to power down before removing the battery cable.
But, you don't need to wait 15 minutes for the whole car to go asleep, you only have to wait until the red LED light goes out on the Nav unit before disconnecting the battery. Good time to think of updating to a MKIII or MKIV.

That's unfortunate news, considering I hardly ever used the navigation because of simple aps on my EVO phone. Can't believe changing the battery, would have zap the unit. But from all the feedback i'm reading, you guys are dead on. Especially with the symptoms I have. I don't recall waiting until the red LED light went off when changing out the battery a few times.
I can't spare the extra $400 right now, but I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for upgrading to the MKIV. Like I said, I don't rely on the navigation, but it's a cool "showoff" when I have a few friends riding along. The radio/CD changer plays, but I keep having to hit the power button to restart it. I guess that can carry me over until I can upgrade and buy a Navi unit. What sucks is the LCD display doesn't light up at all, and with it being the wide screen that was a cool feature. smh thanks again! |
