M5 vs. Tesla Model S Drag Race
BMWs aren't about 0-100 mph times. Nevertheless, a Model S beat an M5 two out of three times in Automobile magazine's drag race.
The cars are about the same price. The M5 has better numbers on paper. In a real test 100% torque from a standstill makes a difference. Quote:
Anyone with an M5 care to comment if they are using Launch Control properly? http://rumors.automobilemag.com/feat...m5-175305.html

There's a big semi-angry thread about this on BFC that I was just reading.
1/2 seem to think the test was rigged to favor the Tesla, the other 1/2 dont care but think the journalist cant drive

who gives a damn about a Tesla in this forum. This is Bimmerfest and M5 is the king of performance sedans.
Nuff said. I will not change the exhaust sound tone of an M5 vs artificially powered electric car. I am sorry but this me.. everyone is entitled to their opinion. |

You will have to ask the mod's about that. I had originally posted elsewhere, but they moved the thread here.
Since we are in this forum, I still am curious to hear what F10 M5 owners have to say about how the M5 was driven. The launch looks poorly executed. Is the Tesla is more forgiving of driver error? ================ There are going to be people cross shopping the Model S with an M5 and E63 AMG. These are customers that may already have a BMW or MB. It is worth noting that Tesla did mange to get in the same league on their first attempt. People in this forum chose the F10 M5. We probably would too.

I'm surprised that there are 7 who cared to post to this thread.

I don't know about the Telsa or even the manufacturer of this car! but the M5 is one sick car, no questions asked and I 2nd the opinion of the other member stating the launch control wasn't well adjusted.

I think the response time of the driver in the M5 was much slower than the driver in Model S. If you watch the cars' break lights, Model S' go out much earlier than that of M5.

No surprise! I had a unique opportunity to drive the Tesla roadster on Road America and it was very quick 0 to 65 but at 112 it really was losing all edge.
Model S is a pretty nice car if you have a limited travel area.

Proof that I've watched Mythbusters too much, I analyzed the video frame by frame. If you look at the shadow of the car vs black strip on the road, you can see that the Tesla moved first by 0.34 seconds. At 100mph (aka 146 feet per second), that's 50' or almost three car lengths. Given that the M5 "lost" by less than a car length, I'd say "myth busted".
PS: they're at a road course, so what about lap times? Or did the M5 win by so much they decided not to air that? EDIT: as for "torque" mattering from a stand still, both cars are (or at least the M5 is) tire-limited off the line, so which has more is irrelevant.
