washing car and getting sizzle sound in engine bay?

after running the car to a friend's house for a wash (hot engine) i'm getting a sound like water (or another fluid) is dripping on a heat shield or something else really hot and its making a strong sizzling noise like the fluid is burning off really fast. it is more like a rapid/slow drip vs. a mass amount of fluid burning off.

ive never heard it before, im not washing any differently than before, i dont use pressurized water and im not doing stupid things like directly spraying water into the radiator or near the wipers.

ive heard it the last two washes now and pretty sure it is the hose water as i dont have any oil or coolant leaks...

Mine does it too if I wash the car right after I've driven it. Any "gutter" areas where water runs off might drip onto the exhaust manifold or heat shield. Don't worry about it it can survive that! Our cars can handle driving through even a large puddle. Imagine how much cold water is forced up into the exhaust manifold when that happens at speed. If you're worried about it then open your hood up for 15 minutes and then close it to wash the car after the metal has cooled enough that you don't hear the sizzle. Or just wash the rear of the car and wheels first.

yeah, not worried about it, just curious how it is getting in. definitely a small amount as im just getting drips on something hot.

When I clean my engine bay I will drive my car around the block to make things warm....so when I spray water into the engine bay there is no hydro shock to the metal....but it sure produces a lot of steam!! That's what you call a steam clean but after scrubbing the top sides and rinsing it all down the engine looks good and new again! I keep my engine running while I clean and make sure not to stick anything near the belt or radiator fan.

putting cold water on extremely hot parts causes a very sudden change in temperature... so iono what u mean by trying to avoid shock to the metal.

seems dangerous to clean that way, but the proper way to clean an engine bay has been discussed a thousand times so i won't start it up again.

I just slowly turtle doddle around the block once from a cold engine so that I will have some engine bay warmth to help dry water faster out of small places I can't reach once I have partially closed the hood after cleaning. BMW didn't design a car that will melt under the Saharan sunlight or crack in Arctic freezes after engine start. But everyone is right on this subject. We all have our explanation/justification. LOL. I'm out boys. Happy cleaning!
