windows8?

How do you turn off or shut down the window 8. Since there is no Start button on the left corner, I have a Dell 15R with a I7 processor and 8GB of DDR memory

You're supposed to randomly move the mouse around the screen until the necessary **** will finally pop out of one of the desktop's corners
But seriously, install http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/, or a free alternative: http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/, problem solved

I found it anyway, it's under settings. Just got the Dell today, so it takes a while to get used to, I guess.

Like Vista, I don't ever see myself using windows 8. Looks disgusting.

XP till I can't use it anymore, then windows 7

+1

Got a look at it while browsing in bestbuy yesterday - talk about dumbing things down, jeez.

Having PCs move toward Android's setup is def not the direction I think they should be going. Call me a purist, but I want to see a file structure - it gives order to chaos. What I saw of 8, it's tiled confusion set to a harmony of photobucket. Have we given up on literacy altogether?

As far as Vista - been using it on the desktop for years, never a problem - I suppose I've not really tested its capabilities, but for my use, it's never given me pause.

Am shopping laptops for some consulting, and will definitely try to keep it to XP, if possible, then Vista, and 7 if neither are available. Do not like the 64-bit aspects of 7 though, messes up working with ODBC in that MS DSNs mostly call for 32-bit drivers and that, at least as far as the platforms I've dealt with. You ever try to walk a user through cleaning up the registry to back out the defaults? I at least don't want to have to deal with that on my own machine.

How do you like Windows 8 so far?

I will probably never get it and stick to W7.

Windows 8 'Pro' comes with the full version of Hyper-V. Since I use virtualization a lot, to me upgrading all my Win7 PCs and Laptops at home to Win 8 PRO was worth every penny.

I wish there was a way to disable Metro and put back the Start button.

So far I don't mind Windows8. Just one little extra step to click on desktop and then it's like any Windows OS except no Start button to click on.

Seriously, does Win 8 really do anything significantly better than 7 for the average home user who uses the folding laptop form factor? No interest in a tablet.

I think Win 7 is just fine for my laptops. I'll upgrade my XP trading system when Win 7 64 gets down to $40 on Ebay, about the time MS shuts off support for it. Win 7 should be supported for the next 10 years, probably.

If I have to buy a new system, I figure I can clone a drive with Win 7, replace Win 8 and downgrade relatively painlessly, if Win 8 is too much of a PITA.

But again, for the average home user with a typical set of MS, Apple and Google suites, does Win 8 bring anything to the table?

meh, the sample laptop i saw with win8 looked just different enough to be noticed (and aggrivating??) to the older users, but similar to smartphones, so it is looking at the younger demographic with this one.

the kicker to me, though, was the fact that unless your laptop is a touchscreen, you do not get the full 'benefit' of the sliding and touching the display like a larger smartphone app...

all of the previous softwars that i have would no longer be applicable, either, so i would need to go purchase the 'upgraded' software programs as well.

so, yeah, i passed.

as much as i will be using this thing i do not see the benefit of going the full upgrade.

i will probably be relegated to the stone age now...

Classic Shell FTW!!!

Also, I love the bonus Themes available here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/themes

The Majestic Mountains Theme looks amazing on my side-by-side monitors.

Griffoun - what feature of 8 pro apart from RDP do you find compelling to get you to make this move?

also - what do you mean by "if you know the drill"?

Not much, but I would really like to have RDP on the HTPC which runs Core i5 so I can post-process pictures on it from my ancient laptop while kids watching movies from the MKV archive.

Tell me what's in 7 that's not in 8 Pro other than the interface. Even DVD playback and Media Center is available for free with 7 upgrading to 8 Pro.

The offer is limited time though. I've already got my key from Microsoft, and no I don't have a copy of 8 yet.

2. Upgrade Offer Denied email (Saying my request for $14.99 upgrade offer is denied)
3. Promo Code (contains a promo-code which gives $25 off for Win8-Pro upgrade )

So I ordered it online and sure enough the total was only $14.99 (no tax, and there's a MSFT store here in KS just 10 miles away from home)... I started the 2-Gb download and went to bed.

Is Hyper V on by default? Is the Desktop running in a VM or just a window?

It is not enabled by default. You have to go to "Control Panel->Programs->Turn Windows Features on or off" to enable Hyper-V.

The parent partition (Desktop) is treated differently than other VMs.
