Crankcase Vent Hoses
I replaced my cam sensor today and whilst I was poking around the engine bay I though I would take a look and see if i could identify where I may be having a vacuum leak. I found the crankcase vent hoses - or rather what was left of them!
![]() here is what was left of them when I stripped out all the parts! ![]() I have ordered new hoses from the internet but what I dont know is hwere they connect to. here is one end of the connections ![]() and here is the other end of the connections ![]() my question is - where does the top hose connect to and where does the bottom hose connect to? the engine is an M62 from a BMW X5 2002 E53 4.4i thanks for your help tony

Hi Tony,
Based on your vin# from your previous posting, this is a pic of your "Right" hand drive model. (Picture Below) BMW V8 and 6-Cylinder Crankcase Ventilation Check Valve Replacement – CCV, CVV, PCV, Oil Separator, Cyclonic, DIY How To on September 4, 2012 Half way down the page. Hope this is helpful. http://blog.bavauto.com/category/bmw.../x-series-e53/ ~Mud Last edited by Mudnyrey; 11-10-2012 at 12:57 PM. |

Vent Hoses
The video was informative but does not require the removal of the crankcase vent hoses.
I can see from the diagram which hose goes where on the oil separator but need to know which hose goes where on the other end. It looks as though hose 5 goes to the top connector (connection 8) and hose 4 goes to the bottom connector (connection 7)? ![]() tony

Yeah, I know the video wasn't entirely thorough and was hoping it would have given better detail about those hoses in question.
From your pic and the diagram, Looks like hose #4 goes into #6 lower position of your separator unit and the other end listed as #7 goes into the tube on the lower right hand side of your picture. Hose #5 goes into the Top #6 position of your separator unit and the end of that tubing listed as #8 goes into the Top portion of your picture which is your Ventilation Check Valve that's on back towards the firewall. I'm sure you got it by now? ~Mud Last edited by Mudnyrey; 11-13-2012 at 09:57 PM. |

hoses
Thanks mate
yes I agree. connection #8 is at 90 degrees and so is the hose and connection #7 is slanted like the hose so I think this is right. thanks for your help.

This is a common problem on the E53. Enough so my indy specifically checks them during a PPI.

I have a 04 X5 4.4 that had the CCVs replaced about 1K ago. Im still getting some smoke after idling. I disconnected one of the tubes that goes between the CCV and the intake and put my finger in it when I pulled it out it had a thick film of oil on it. Is this normal? Is that much oil supposed to be getting past the CCvs? Also wouldn't that make it smoke?

The oil separator is supposed to remove the oil. I changed both hoses 400 miles ago and have no smoke. Check the oil separator is functioning correctly

As far as I know the oil separator on my vehicle is the CCVs on the top of the valve covers, I could be wrong. I was told that they were replaced recently. I checked them myself and they seem to be ok no tears cracks or other problems that i can see. It seems odd that the oil in the vent tubes is very clean and I just changed the oil about 500 miles ago. Seems to be getting past somehow. Im wondering if excessive vaccum from the engine being sludged up inside could cause this?

Wow them hoses were bad white lancer! Did your x5 actually run like that, looks like they were like that a while.. I think I'm right in saying that would cause the inlet diaphragm to stay open and thus give a massive vac leak?
