New tires

Today I put on a new set of Pirelli Scorpion A/S tires. I had such good luck with the last set 58,000+ miles and they were just getting down to the wear bar and the performance was good as well as going through the snow.

Cool! Great handling tires, wouldn't go with anything else for the X3. We put a new set as well this past July.

Bought a new set last March. Couldn't see any reason to get anything else, been real happy with them, and got a great deal on them.

Im still trying to find a decent price on them, so far the Continental's are a bit cheaper, Im planning on putting new tires on at the end of next month.

I went to a mom and pop tire shop that I knew I could trust. No chipping the rims,right psi that I told them to put in and they torque the wheel studs to 88 ft. lbs. At a great price.

Took off my OEM 18" Scorpions at 48K miles with still wear on them. Wanted to try for a smoother ride! Went to the Michelin Pilot Sport Plus and have found them to be a better ride with the same or better performance -- and a softer ride. Now have nearly 40K miles on the PSPs and they look good for another 40. Very pleased with them.

20 or 40 what ever it takes.

I got 58k out of my original scorpions. When I replaced them my biggest concern was hwy wear because i hate buying tires annually.

I went with Toyo Turevo ls 2's that are rated at 80k miles. I am happy to say I am just shy of 50k miles on the Toyos and still have about half of the tread left. I think 30k more is plausible (although I am watching closely...the scorpions tread went really fast once they hit 50k miles).

As a side note they perform just as well as the scorpions.

The Michelin A/S Pilots are actually a little better in the snow then the pirelli. I had both. The major difference I found between the two is that the Michelin are a little softer than the Pirelli. This makes for a smoother ride but sacrifices a small bit of cornering at higher speeds. I am talking the difference between 70 and 75 on an on ramp. So not really much. However, because the Pirelli are a harder compound they will give an added 5k in miles over the Michelin.

So its a trade off. Softer ride: Michelin. Longer life Pirelli. Michelin are definitely a better A/S though as there was a marked change when heavy rain or snow was a factor.

They have performed well in snow up in Tahoe. I have never had to chain up, but 3 times a year for me on either set of tires doesn't let me say I have tons of experience.

Now in rain I can tell you without a doubt the Toyos are as good if not better than the scorpions as they have more sipping. We have plenty of wet winters here in nor cal.

I must have different priorities and expectations.

I'm happy I got over 36k mls on my past set of summer Conti CrossContact UHP. I actually got another set of them in September; I guess at $227 a pop, they're not popular on Tirerack since a couple of them were manufactured back in late 2010.......I'd never expect 40k on a set of summer tires.

Scorpions will give you 60k miles easy, can't beat that for the price. Do you need summer/snow tires in SC? Why don't go with all seasons?

I don't like the compromise in handling and feel of all-seasons (less crisp, among other things), so I refuse to go back to all-seasons. I strongly feel BMWs and most European cars were designed with summer tires in mind in terms of handling characteristics.

Last winter didnt really "happen" so I got away with summer tires year-round in central NC. However, my new location is close to the mountains and I frequent Western NC so I will likely have to replace my worn winter tire set this season. Ugh, $1000 for summers in September, now $600 3 months later. Timing isn't ideal.

This past spring, my mom's 325i sport needed replacing of the summer set. She balked at the cost of the ContiSportContact3s (which are awesome) and asked if she could just get all-seasons. I promptly said "no" and ordered her a set of Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 2s.

I must drive much differently than those of you getting so many miles out of your original tires. I only got 23K on my Scorpions. To be clear though, I am not unhappy with this mileage. I rarely get more than 15K on my PS2s or their Bridgestone equal on my RDSTR. Yes, I may tend to push my X3 harder as I'm used to the performance of the ///M. I now have the Conti DWS versions and hope they will do well once the snow arrives (it is a couple weeks late and it didn't even get below 40* last night....), if it arrives. No skiing on natural snow close by yet.

I don't think I could handle replacing tires every 20k to 30k. I would be burning through tires every six months. A/S are a good enough compromise considering I am a high speed hwy super commuter. Luckily I do this in California where really extreme weather conditions only exist if you seek them out.

Now as a side note the best milage I ever got on a set of tires was 102k miles. They were Toyo 800 ultras on a gmc. They sold me on them because they had a 100k mile warranty and the engineer in me wanted to prove them wrong. A little over two years later they had 102k miles on them and still 1/4 tread left. I only replaced them because it was winter and was worried about wet traction. Not particular awesome tires at anything but hwy comfort and wear. It's a shame you can't buy those any longer....although they are not tires I would use in my x3.
