The BMW i3 and BMW i8 are the first two cars launch under BMW's new sub brand BMW i. The i3 is an all carbon fiber, all electric vehicle meant for urban mobility.

Chameleon charger. Will BMW use it?

One glaring omission in the i3 skeleton is the charger. Motor, battery and inverter are all there to see, but no charger.

BMW hasn't said much about the charger in their press releases either.

I wondering if BMW is licensing the Chameleon charger from Renault. It is to both companies advantage if they both use the same fast charger connector. Also the existing charger infrastructure around Munich is compatible with Chameleon.

To date, AC charging has been "slow" with a full charge taking around 6 to 8 hours. Fast chargers are DC. DC fast chargers are big expensive boxes.

Renault's patent improves on an existing brilliant idea: Reuse parts in the drivetrain for the charger. With Chameleon, the inverter and motor are the charger. The extra parts needed to complete a 44kW charger cost 150. There is a significant weight savings too, as high power chargers are heavy.

44kW would charge an i3 in about 30 minutes.
