Advice on purchasing

Planning on purchasing a an E28 1986 BMW 535i, with 290,000 km (around 180,000 miles). It has a limited slip diff and a 5-speed manual. From the ad it looks that there is hardly any rust, however it has a big dent on the drivers side front fender. Apparently the ABS is not working, the headrests dont operate properly, and the master cylinder has to be lubricated. Although some of the fuel and brake lines have been replaced. The asking price is around $2,000 however i will try to get it for around $1500. I am going to check it out tomorrow

I am just wondering if i will be way over my head here or will this find be a sufficient start for a project car.

An inline six, three pedals, LSD, and rear wheel drive...whats not to love?

Buy it, get yourself a Bentley repair manual, and be pepared for some wrenching. They're not usually very difficult to work on and lots of parts are available. Good luck.

Yeah I realized that after creeping some of these forums. That is also part of why I think that this would be a viable project. ....plus they look awesome !

What is this Bentley repair manual that I hear about so much? And where do I get one?

It's the comprehensive repair Bible for this model BMW. You can get them online at Ebay, Amazon, maybe even Craigslist or possibly some other used discount booksellers. It will prove invaluable in your need for repair guidance. Do a Google search for "E28 Bentley repair manual" and go from there.

1986 BMW 535i E28 with ABS- The brake light comes on when brake pedal depressed then it goes off after I start driving. Sometimes (60-70%) the light will come on then go off after I depress the pedal.

Would this be the Master cylinder?

Sometimes it feels like it goes past a stop or the piston seats inside. The brakes work but there is something that is wrong.

Any thoughts?

Older cars' brakes can get stuck or not operate properly from corrosion, wear, and neglect. I would suggest removing the wheels and carefully examing each caliper, rotor, the slide pins, the brackets, hydraulic hoses etc. In the last few years I have completely rebuilt the brake system on my 528e including the replacement of much of the steel brake lines. One of the things I have not replaced was the master cylinder, mine has always functioned properly.

All rotors and brake pads have been replaced and calipers are working properly.

It is not the brake lining light that comes on, it is the brake light next to the ABS light.

The light comes on when pedal is depressed, then a few seconds the light goes off. Car stops but the pedal feels like it goes past a stop or seats as it travels the length of movement.

Collapsed or deteriorated hoses can also cause similar problems. There are tests you can perform for your master cylinder that can help you diagnose the problem better.
