Help engine noise
Hi I got a 2003 m3 with 17,000 miles when I rev the motor to about 3,000 rpm it has a tapping noise did these motors have any major problems? somebody said there was a recall on the bottom end? do they have problems in the bottom end or i thought it could be a vano failure do the vanos make a noticeable noise if there going bad?

With a 2003, you should be past the build date for the engines with the bad rod bearings, but you could do a little on-line research to find the exact range of dates for this little nightmare.
Yes, your vanos could be blown, causing the noise from mis-timing of the cams, or specifically from someone adjusting the valves with the cams mis-timed from a bad vanos. Ours just received its third vanos unit ($5,000 part) at 100k miles. You really should have a good independent BMW specialist diagnose it. |

The service action (not a recall) did include early 2003 cars, but the issue was fixed in the later 2002 cars. The early 2003 cars were included by BMW to make those owners happy.
But that said, there could still be issues depending on how the car was driven. The issue was two fold. One was a mismatch between the rod bearings and the crankshaft, leading to less clearance than required. The other was on some early 2002 models, an low output from the oil pump.
