E39 (1997 - 2003)

Question Front wheel spin

If you lift your car, put it on jack stands and try to spin the wheels:
a-they will spin freely, hardly any noise
b-they will be hard to spin, make a grinding noise

Mine do 'b'
while driving and coming near a stop, I let it cruse until I have to brake, but i hear this grinding noise like if it's braking before i step on the brake pedal.
Any ideas why?

Maybe a stuck brake caliper?
Perhaps a brake line with a bit of trash in it, not allowing the pressure to release, or releasing slowly?

I would check all of your brake pads to see if any 1 has more wear than the others. It can be a stuck caliper as mentioned above, but because of the grinding noise, I definitely would say it is a rock stuck between the rotor and dust shields.

The rotors look normal. I didn't see any rocks stuck in there. So most likely its a stuck caliper (in both front wheels btw) or the rotors are warped

It could also be a bad wheel bearing. Check the brakes first though.

You could remove the brake pads and put the caliper back without any pads, and try spinning the wheel again. If the problem persists, then it is most likely a wheel bearing. If the problem went away, then it is most likely a stuck caliper or a brake line issue.

Probably time to re-build the brake calipers.
Had the same problem, and also a shimmy at +/- 70 mph. New rubber seals + cleaning the piston calipers (which started to corrode at the outer part) fixed it. You might want to do rears as well, because if the front rubber boot for calipers are in poor shape, the rears are not far behind. And rears a PITA compared to the fronts.

It has been almost 2 years since I did my 6 brake hoses and caliper rebuild, things run smoothly.
It is easier than people think.

Also, while the caliper is out, you can spin the bearing by hand to check its condition.
