Best Used 7 Series to Buy
Hi Folks:
I am in the market to get a used 7 series to replace my 2004 530i which got totalled recently - looking for no earlier than 2000 model. From a quick overview it seems the 3rd generation is the most popular. E38 from 1995 to 2001. Can some please share your opinion on which model and year would be the best one to get considering: 1.The best package with default technology - is it 2000 or 2001 2. Which model 740i or 740iL - in regards to gas mileage 3. In terms of known mechanical/technical issues which could be a big flag. Any input is greatly appreciated |

If you get an 740i, it MUST have a sport-package otherwise its a waste. 740iL have lots more room, seems to be a better cruiser, and smoother. Check build date, make sure they have wide-screen navi. Sport 740iL are nice, they will feature the S-EDC struts which almost are always blown. Cost is 1100 each but they can be replaced with ANY 740i strut, even from 1995 740i. Its debated that the 98s are a really great year to avoid VANOS hell which im dealing with. Otherwise, if you land an 01 740i or iL and swap out those timing guides you'll be solid.

I've never heard of any E38 differential going out. And most real enthusiast owners replace their transmission filters and fluid, which exceed their 120,000 mile service life. I am at 158K on original transmission that was serviced regularly.

My first E38 was a non sport 740i-my second a 750iL with EDC. I never felt that I missed out because the 740 was not a sport, but it depends what you want from the car and how you want to drive it. Now the 750 is '99 and the edc shocks are still fine, and they at least give you a choice of suspension hardness, but I don't have the EDC on around town on poorer surfaces.
'99 on is facelift so there is liitle change in spec after. I would say that if you like all the toys, then find a car that has what you want, as retro fits can be big jobs. These cars do not have universal wiring looms, they were wired only for the kit that was ordered. Adding equipment means finding and adding the appropriate piece of loom as well, and possibly a module which may have to be coded. Things can surprise you with simplicity but more often sheer complexity. It is critical to check as far as you possibly can that everything works especially if you lack repair skills. Love my E38 735iL. Service it more than required and pay attention to common problem areas. Job prevents too many trips with it but what a dream when it is on a run..

I have a 740il sport 2000. By far my favorite car ever!. It has 163,xxx runs well. Just make sure you have a good honest mechanic look over it well.

Oh, you could not measure the gas milage difference i/iL, but the iL ride is much better IMO. More pose value too!
