E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993. |

i bought my beemer from a guy. Recently had trouble shifting into 3rd gear. Drained oil out of tranny and almost nothing came out but just a little charcoal colored sludge. and refilled gear oil. and now i am having trouble shifting into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
Not sure if i should rebuild transmission or change out clutch first. Help pleaseeee

Take it to your nearest dealer to see what they can diagnose the problem as? If not, then I dunno man!

Have you tried to rebleed the slave cylinder? If not try that first before you go tearing into a clutch job.

assuming your car is a manual right?
manual transmissions are pretty well bullet proof, you can do a lot too them and they wont give. the BMW autos arent half that robust.

syncros are shot. rebuild is needed. anytime you have manual tranny fluid that color it is always a sign to get it rebuilt.

The problem only appeared once you replaced the fluid ?
I would be prepared to bet on you putting in unsuitable fluid

This is possible but I have seen reports of some owners filling their manual transmissions with ATF fluid and claiming it gives them smoother changes. ![]() I stick to the recommended gearbox oil...75W-80 I believe.

I would say your synchro's are done. I had the same problem.. I found one on craigslist for a hundred bucks. 25k on a craigslist transmission and still shifts great no grinds. Sometimes you get lucky.

I would go with getting a new trans before rebuild
