BMW 5 Series is the premium segment leader in 2012 with 359,016 sold

F10 5 series premium segment leader 2012

The BMW 5 Series has supremely defended its market leadership in the segment of business automobiles. 359,016 customers worldwide opted for a BMW 5 Series model in 2012. Whether an elegant Sedan, a dynamic Touring or a luxurious Gran Turismo, the BMW 5 Series thrills customers all over the world with its distinctive combination of design, technology, dynamic performance and comfort.

Drive
The modern 4, 6 and 8-cylinder engines provide an impressively high level of output, running smoothness and efficiency.

For example, the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition makes do with an unsurpassed fuel consumption of just 4.5 litres of diesel per 100 kilometers. Even the extremely powerful BMW 535d with 230 kW/313 bhp and a maximum torque of 630 Newton meters is more economical than the competition, with an average fuel consumption of only 5.4 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers.

The top-of-the-range engine in the BMW M550d xDrive for the Sedan and Touring models is unique in the segment. The impressive performance figures for the in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine developed exclusively for the BMW M Performance automobiles with three turbochargers are as follows: 280 kW/381 bhp, maximum torque 740 Nm, maximum engine speed 5,400 rpm, average fuel consumption 6.3 liters per 100 kilometers.

[fetaureimg="F10 5 series forum"]https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=358096&stc=1&d=1358460279[/featureimg]

The 4-cylinder petrol engines are fitted with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology, likewise providing a high level of output at a low fuel consumption. The two 2-litre turbo engines in the BMW 520i and 528i feature a turbocharging system based on the twin-scroll principle, variable valve control VALVETRONIC and variable camshaft control double VANOS - as such they are based on the technology package of the multiple award-winning inline 6-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo in the BMW 535i.

Driving dynamics and comfort
The BMW 5 Series offers the perfect compromise between sporty flair and suspension comfort. Over and above the excellent standard suspension, numerous technologies are optionally available to further enhance Sheer Driving Pleasure.

For example, the integral active steering uses steered rear wheels and variable steering ratio on the front axle to subjectively shorten the wheelbase when driving slowly, thereby improving maneuverability and agility. When driving fast, the wheelbase is subjectively lengthened in the interests of driving stability and comfort.

BMW F10 5 series

AdaptiveDrive combines individually adjustable shock absorbers with active stabilizers at both axles so to achieve both a more comfortable and a more sporty ride.

The Driving Experience Control switch enables the character of the vehicle to be altered significantly at the press of a button - from very sporty through to highly efficient.

The intelligent all-wheel drive system xDrive is available for a total of 17 BMW 5 Series variants.

ConnectedDrive
The interconnection between driver, vehicle and the outside world is becoming increasingly important. The BMW 5 Series offers numerous innovations in this essential and fast-developing area.

Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) provides traffic information in real time, suggesting appropriate alternative routes in the event of a traffic jam.

BMW Night Vision uses a thermal image camera to detect people and animals from a distance of up to 300 metres, warning the driver of potential collisions.

The full-colour Head-Up Display projects relevant information into the driver's field of vision such as current speed, speed limits, navigation directions and warnings.

F10 5 series BMW

The new multifunctional instrument display shows instruments relevant to the current driving mode. For example, in ECO PRO mode the driver is given important tips for an economical driving style. Meanwhile in Sport mode the colour and graphics change, focusing on data relevant to a sporty driving style.

My BMW Remote App gives the drive access to numerous vehicle functions via smartphone, including locking the car or activating the headlamp flasher - so as to be able to find the vehicle more easily in large car parks, for example.

The BMW Connected App provides a range of functions inside the car such as web radio, Facebook, Twitter, RSS feeds, Wiki Local and personal calendar.

Bluetooth Office transforms the BMW 5 Series into a mobile office. The main smartphone office functions such as e-mail, appointments, contacts and notes are transferred directly into the vehicle and displayed on the screen.

Coming from an E-Class I can truly say that this makes sense. The F10 is IMO a segment or two above the "Luxury Midsize Segment" as a total product.

Congrats BMW - now bring F11 535 to US.
F31 is a big step backwards for wagon fans.

This can't be. I have read too many complaints from too few people on the F10 forum that reiterate BMW has missed the mark.

The strong sales must be an attempt for all the naysayers to get the F10 off the car lots.

Its all a marketing ploy by BMW, the sales numbers cannot be right since the F10 is slow, too big, doesnt handle well and does not performance as well as a E60 or the new A6

The F10 is getting closer and closer to MB E-class and such, this is disappointing for old-school 5-series(E39, E60, etc, etc) lovers, but does grab lots of customers from MB and others. It is impressive that F10 is close 30% of sales volume. In the old days the 5-series was 20% sales for 50% profit, nowadays the F10 is even a bigger cash cow for BMW than previous generations.

I can honestly say after having my 2013 528 for a month, it is the BEST 5er I've owned. I never thought I'd own a 4 turbo banger but it has A LOT of power and I'm getting GREAT gas mileage. The interior is steps above luxury from my previous 5er's - I couldn't be happier and it takes a lot to make my happy.

It looks like BMW has found the winning formula for maximum sales. A major step up in luxury, a beautiful design and deep discounts off msrp to entice buyers makes the five super competitive. It also makes it less and less likely that the old formula of being the segments standout as a drivers car will make a return. Money talks loudly in board rooms.

I've owned two 3 series and a super luxury MB. I now have a '13 550i M sport. I really like it. Those who want to continue bashing the F10 or other BMWs need to find another platform to spray their bitterness and let the others in these forums have pleasant conversations about cars related to this forum. Many of us dont want to hear how much one prefers Audi or Mercedes and when and if we do, we will log into the appropriate forum. Please be respectful for those of us who are appreciative of these fine automobiles.

As it should. BMW is a business entity that is responding to consumer demands.

That's hard to argue. If BMW wants to capture all types of buyers in all segments the largest chunk will be customers looking for maximum luxury and status for the buck and the non M cars will be built to fit them while the M cars will be cars built to capture customers looking for the traditional BMW sports feel. There will be no more "cheap" solutions. BMW M or Porsche if you prioritize sports. If BMW can cover both types and raise volume, revenue and profits who can blame them? I don't, even if I personally don't like it as so often is the case when you are in a minority.

True but the segment looking for more sports than the new Ms is very thin and there are no better alternatives at the price point. Not a big risk/loss in the head of a bean counter. In 2010 you got a very good sports sedan for about $50k ( 535i with sports pkg. ). To get close to the same sports feel today you need to pony up close to the double for an M5. Ouch.

I want to buy BMW 528i or 535i too but I didn't buy it because I didn't like the way BMW trying to make money or profit by adding a lot of options I don't want (i.e heat seat, sideview camera, parking sensor, etc...) and missing out options I really want (i.e premium hifi sound). Image a premium $60K-$70K car that doesn't even come with backup camera or premium sound as standard! Therefore I don't thnk BMW could sell a lot of those cars like they said, I did some research and found out that BMW inflated the sell numbers by selling the cars to dealers at low cost so the dealers could use those cars as demo or re-sell later. BMW even delayed the sale number announcement until Mercedes announced the sale number so BMW could announced higher number! BMW wanted to re-claim the "number 1 cars sold" to make people think BMW is cool car so people would buy more BMW.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...359646688.html

You can google "BMW inflated sale number" to see more news!

I live in the Eastbay California and travel San Jose a lot, I see a few people driving F10 (2012-2013 5 series) since it was out in 2011/2012, but I barely see any F30 (2012 3 series) during 2012 on the street!

I hope you're right. The less F10's on the road the better for me.
