F12 / F13 (2012 - Current)
The future is now! The all new 6 series coupe (F12) and convertible (F13) details are out and dealers are taking orders. Still no word on when the 4 door Gran Coupe will go into production. |

1600 miles and just added the 2nd Qt. of oil
Today the second quart of oil was added within the first 1600 miles. I have seen posts where oil usage is high - but this seems excessive. What causes such usage? Is it concerning?
Thanks Much!! |

That does seem excessive.

That is too much from my experience. I drive approx 20k per year and most of that is highway, my burn rate has been steady at 1 quart per 4,000 miles. It is possible that the car was delivered to you with less than the correct level of fluid but that does not completely explain the consumption in my view.

Excessive. I have done more than 10,000 miles with two qrts added.
Most people seem to get around 4,000 to 5,000 miles between additions. Get the dealer to start monitoring this. R.

Definitely excessive. What's up with these cars needing oil when they're brand new? I thought German engineering would be better than this.

oil usage
Just saw a 5500 mile 2013 650 needing an engine because it used aprox. 7 quarts of oil with no indicator light . others were checked , also in need of oil.

My '13 sucks oil far more than my '12 did. I'm putting a quart in every 1800 miles or so.

Quick question for the oil burners out there: Did you follow the break-in procedure?

I would think it would take serious abuse by alot of new owners during break in to cause so many 650's to burn so much oil - especially with synthetic. Nobody is going to convince me this is "normal"

The N63 engine burns oil and also lots of petrol. But not excessive like RJJM.

I had a running theory over in the F10 forum, that the gentle break in procedure owners tended to have more oil burning issues that those of us who broke in the cars hard. Many of the early oil burners (<4kmi) started to burn less oil over time and by the time they hit 20kmi they weren't burning much oil at all. I added my first quart at 10,885 miles on my 550 and that's after numerous runs down the dragstrip. After my first oil change, I went 16kmi between oil changes without any oil adds.

^^^ If you're right my new X5M should burn a quart, oh, say every 50,000 miles

Has anyone had their dealer or tech explain why the N63/N63TU is burning so much oil when new? This is not normal for any make of vehicle, never mind a top of the line 90K one. Add in no dipstick to visually check the level - if there is a sensor problem and you don't get a low level warning it could be a seized engine. Unacceptable.

That is quite excessive I think. My M6 needs oil every 3500-3600 miles it seems. I just put in my 2nd quart last week.

One more data point.
I sat my Wife in the car last weekend and told her it was likely the low oil level light would come on soon so she should not panic when it does. We checked the oil level and it read one level above low. Well, yesterday at 4,0XX miles the low oil light came on while she was on a 100 mile road trip. It re-appeared each time she started / drove the car yesterday. I added a quart when she got home (used Mobil 1 European blend BMW-LL oil from closest auto-parts store to top up). It would seem my 2012 is almost exactly "average"......Since my dealer is ~20 miles from my house I figured it would cost me 2 gallons of gas to get there and back for a free top-up thus offsetting the $9 I paid for the quart of oil from O'Reilly's auto parts......you can't win with this issue...it will cost you a few bucks to remedy.....all is back to normal........ Despite this typical BMW issue (my 2006 650 also burned oil, but at about half the rate, needing a top up every 7-8K miles) I still love the car.....it rocks! |

One question -> is this oil consumption only with the 8 cylinder engine, or does the 6 cyl in the 640 see this same oil use??? Hope not since I just ordered a 2014 640...
