Hello Everyone,
I have a 2001 BMW 740il and I have an intermittent check engine light. My OBDII reader is reading: P0011 - advanced timing (bank 1). The light will come on and turn off all by itself. The car just passed California Smog check even though the light keeps turning on and off (light was off during time of test). I have already replaced both camshaft position sensors and the light continues to turn on and off. The car does not feel like it has any loss of power what so ever. The only thing the car has is the dreaded diesel sound (not the timing chain guides sound). any thoughts? what could this be? You would think the car wouldnt pass SMOG if the timing was off. Please help! |

Hi,
Most of the time, a P0011 indicates a timing chain (guide) problem. Others have said its' been caused by a CPS problem, but most admit it's a timing chaing guide issue. If it were my car, I'd drop the oil pan & look for broken bits of the timing chain guide. Hate to bring bad news, and I do hope this isn't the cause of your P0011, but.......chances are......at least you'll know.

Just a thought, but could it be a vanos solenoid?
