Battery - Water Pump Question

2006 330xi - 65K miles

Been getting the overheat warnings and loud fan sounds - I know my battery is going bad.....could the weak battery cause the water pump to have issues or is the pump definitely bad? Looking at $1000 for parts/labor (independent BMW shop)for water pump alone- does that seem right? Thanks for any help/info!

Sounds like a water pump. Have it looked at asap, it's not anything you want to put off if it's failing.

Getbmwparts.com is about the best OEM supplier for a water pump. $422.36 plus shipping but I would also replace the tstat at $91.66 plush shipping. This is about a 3 1/2 hour labor charge and some coolant too so you can see what the numbers might be.

The electric water pumps on this BMW tend to fail at around 50-80K miles so this isn't unexpected. I actually carry a new BMW water pump in my trunk because I am at 55K miles and who knows. It is entirely likely your battery is going south too if this is the original. I would have them replace that since you are paying for labor on this it should be cheaper. Be sure that they register the battery which resets the intelligent battery sensor (it is really a computer with various algorthims) and is supposed to extend battery life which I guess it did if this is a 2006.
If you are a DIY guy you can do this job yourself since the water pump is on the bottom of the car...

I've not seen them but apparently INPA often shows water pump speed codes before it actually fails.

Pull codes right now if you have the equipment. If not either replace the pump or pull over immediately when the temp light comes on and pay for the tow. Even if INPA shows nothing I'd still spend a day on the weekend swapping the pump and battery at that age + with those symptoms. Actually I personally would not drive that car until the pump is swapped out - it's out of warranty so any knock on damage from overheating will cost you too .

Don't forget to order new bolts too. You can't reuse the existing ones.
