Explanation for the uneducated
OK, I am new to BMW but recently purchased a "new" leftover 2011 328xi. A total of 22 miles showed on the odometer. I am old (early 60's) but young at heart. I will most likely die with this machine. Thus, I have been driving a beat up truck through the snow, salt, and slush to save miles and preserve it so it will carry me through my driving life.
![]() I am ignorant in that I purchased a 328 but everyone on this board refers to "e92, f30, x91, etc." I can't seem to comprehend what I own. Is there "conversion chart" or some reading material I can peruse? It appears I am uninformed. Love the car though and will be driving it more when the roads clear. |

E46, E90, E91, etc. refer to the Chassis Code or Chassis Designation.
E90 and E91s began production with the 2006 Model Year 325i and 330i, refers to Sedans and Wagons respectively. E92 and E93s began production with the 2007 Model year 328i and 335i, refers to Coupes and Convertibles respectively. Prior to the E9X series (a general monicker for all body styles of this generation), the E46 used the same chassis designation for all body types. Other examples include the E39 5-series, succeeded by the E60, which was succeeded in turn by the most recent F10. F30 and F31 began production with the 2012 Model Year 328i and 335i, refers to Sedans and Wagons respectively. F32 and F33 begin production sometime in 2013, refers to Coupes and Convertibles respectively. Now known as 4-series instead of 3-series. F34 begins production sometime in 2013, refers to the 3-series GT. F36 begins production sometime in 2014, refers to the 4-series Gran Couupe. F80 begins production sometime in 2014, refers to the M3 Sedan. F82 begins production sometime in 2014, refers to the M4 Coupe (functionally identical to M3, rebadged as M4 for two-door cars).

It sounds like you are on the right track, by trying to limit your BMW's exposure to salt and slush. If properly maintained, your E90 328Xi should last a long time. You may want to do a bit more maintainance than what is included in the free maintneance plan, for maximum service life.

Why should you die with this car? Just stay off the Mass Pike in the bad weather, and this car (and you) can keep going and going and going and going. Don't sweat the technical stuff. If you can stand the snark, folks here will be happy to help with real questions, and 'search is your friend' is a mantra here. (too, you can look at the forum titles, and it will tell you what year range goes with which car chassis). Welcome to the fest, young whippersnapper.

If you're in your early 60s and otherwise in good health, I hope you will not die still owning a 25 year old BMW that requires regular communication with the mothership's computer in Munich for software updates in order to stay happy. BTW, the average age of a Harley Davidson buyer is 47 and the average age of a Porsche 911 buyer is 51. Once the kids are through school, it leaves the guy who wrote out all the checks more money for toys. Drive safely!

I'm a youngster-at-heart in my "early 60's" and just started receiving my Social Security benefits. I bought my '06 Z4 M Roadster in July and drove a Honda S2000 for 13 years before that. I'm planning on European Delivery of an M4 in 2016, not sure what I'll buy after that.
Welcome to the wonderful world of BMW! Wikipedia will give you a full history of all BMW models. Unfortunately you have arrived to this world just as BMW is offering more and more models with even more distinct chassis codes, so it may take a little more time to figure out all the current and upcoming models. We're also in the middle of the 3/4 Series changeover, so if you wanted a new 3 Series Sedan it will be an F30 while a 3 Series Coupe will still be an E92. Fast forward six months and the 3 Series Coupe will not exist, it will be a 4 Series F32. All you have to know right now is that you have a 3 Series E90 328xi if you own a Sedan and a 3 Series E92 328xi if you own a Coupe.

Geeze, I have been on Social Security for going on 8 years now, born in 1941. Am planning for an M4 in a few years.
BTW Just sold our 2004 330Ci 6MT convert with 120K miles on it so they do last if you take care of them.

I'm four years older than you. Don't you know when it is time to stop hanging upside down? My last aerobatic flight was 3 years ago (and it may well be my LAST). I stopped flying last year. |

![]() Pics or it didn't happen If you are in the New England area (or any area) you should consider coming to the Climb to the Clouds Event V in the summer (we are still working out the details). It's a drive event where we drive around the fun/twisty roads of New Hampshire. We raise some money for charity, do auctions, and have lots of fun in the process. I highly recommend it (I've been going for C2C 2, 3 and 4). Come hang on the forum. We not only talk cars, we also talk trash.
