Sport Seats: Corrosion?

A crusty rust like substance is visible on the outer aluminum joint of both bucket seats in my new M Sport. It could be dried BBQ sauce for all I know but it's on both joints in same spot so I know it isn't a sloppy assembly worker dripping his Big Whopper.

The seats work beautifully but this could indicate corrosion of other less visible parts. Anyone know what this is or have similar issue? Will post pics tomorrow.

This is a known issue with the F30 seats. I'm not sure what BMW is doing about it.

Good to know, thanks! So there are other posts on this? Here's pic. The very fact it's visible is sloppy on the designer's part but in this case I'm glad the interior upholstery is visible.

I have never before seen a BMW seat that had the frame exposed. I would call that a manufacturing defect. I'm recalling the rust issue was something that BMW has instructed the seat supplier to address. I don't think I would be satisfied to keep those seats and would insist on their replacement.

This certainly puts damper on my 3 day old dream car. I can't believe BMW would hire assembly workers who have so much contempt for the company and so much disrespect for their cars and customers. Very disappointed in BMW as a corporation and the executives who run it. They obviously know about this and buried it under the rug.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about the rust spots on your 3-day old car. Apparently, you answered my question. The rusty seat frame issue is still unresolved. If this is happening to a 2-year old automaker, i can understand it. For BMW, it's inexcusable.

This is my first exposure with the "ultimate driving machine". I gather a gang of incompetent greedy crooked bastards populate the executive ranks at BMW?

Slow down, take a breath

Call your dealer, give them a chance to make this right!

I just checked under the seats on my '11 335is and the they look factory fresh with a clean baked on black painted finish. BMW must have changed seat manufaturers.

I was worried because the car is stored in our Florida house garage that gets very humid inside when I store it for a couple of months in between visits.

Leer or Lear is the manufacturer.

My seats are perfect but were made in the period where the treatment wasn't added. It's inconsistent.

The seats are made by Lear. It was their f up. I have seen reports of replacements being done at the dealer level.

i had mine replaced by my dealer...key is to act quick. Your build date is pretty late, new seats were commissioned after 11/2012, so I'm surprised that your seat frames snuck through...
regardless, ask the dealer to replace the entire seat frame.

Yeah, LOL, the joke is on me. So much for Quality Control @ BMW... No explanation for this except dishonesty and greed! No one on BMW's assembly line saw this, right? Nobody at the dealer saw this, right? Bull! I'm thinking of notifying the FTSB and media. BMW foists defective cars on innocent victims, that's the bottom line. I think BMW should be penalized for its dishonesty and incompetence, that way they won't pull this stunt again.

And yes, I'll get the dealer to make this right.

If you know someone in the media then please go for it regardless of whether you get this fixed or not. This will be a great service to future owners. They need to be held accountable for their suppliers as well.

your an idiot. yes dishonesty greed.. are you serious? you do realize there are millions of parts that go in the car right? you do realize that bmw does not make all the parts right? you do realize that sometimes one part out of these millions may be defective right? you do realize the defect was not evident when the car was built, but developed over time; during the shipping and selling process right? you do realize that bmw will make this right for you and not charge for it right?

who am i kidding, you'll probably go in there screaming and yelling demanding the service managers first born; furthering the sterotype that bmw drivers are d-bags

That excuse may have worked 5 or 6 months ago when reports of rusty seat frames started appearing. To have this problem still occurring on a F30 with recent build date is indefensible.

Is childish name-calling behavior tolerated on this forum?

BMW fixed the rusty seat base issue with post-Nov 2012 builds. Mine is fine.

Hope the OP gets those suckers replaced.

i believe that the issue is cropping up post production-- there was a batch of seats made by lear that didnt have the correct corrosion resist coating applied. the rust probably starts when the car is exposed to moist salt air while being shipped to the dealer, and if its a lot car, gets worse sitting there.
