E34 Driver demographic survey.. Who drives e34's today?

I got bored and came up with a survey to see who is driving e34's today.. Are they first time BMW owners or the brand loyal these days..

not only for the E34, it seems most either come from a 7 or 3 back ground, rather than a 5 being a first BMW purchase.
good compromise between the two i guess, fairly well specced but without being a total boat.

and much older than the average 3er driver

Hahahaha some how it took me an e30, an e36 twice and and an e38 to get here... making the 5 series number 5.. hehe

It's freaking great, spank everyone you see with everyone else you know inside it.. well you could at least.. hahaha

Id say it is the BEST car i have ever owned.. Out of 11.. And i drive cars hard/evaluate the sh*t out of them!

Working for a dealership every time i get in a car i have never driven its like an episode of Top Gear - UK of course hehehe

i dont know how you could possibly choose an E34 over an E30, the E30 is a much better car for having fun with your pants on in. Did you have an M42 powered one?

I keep a list of the cars i have owned, have had
6x E30s (including two Tech2 Motorsports)
5x E34s (three of which have been wagons, one was an iX)
2x E36s
and a half dozen other non BMWs

All up 16 cars, and only been driving for 5 years, so an average of a new one every 4 months lol

I had an M52B28 powered Tech2 E30, i loved that car to bits. Was my project before i parted it out to build by E34. i like my E34 now, but for different reasons.

I won't try to list all of my cars. It's fairly lengthy, but nothing like sleds list

My first BMW was a 1991 735i. I knew nothing about BMWs when I bought it and as it turned out, it had a lot of gremlins that I later found out were typical for the 7 series. Just too many bells and whistles. But ….. I was hooked on BMW from that point on.

My next one was my first 92 model E34 525i in silver. I loved the color because it hid dirt so well. I got 256K miles out of it before reverse went out on the transmission. I immediately fell in love with this car and this is where my long term love affair with the E34 started.

My 95 325is E36 was next. It was a nice little car. It was quicker than my E34Sold her with 241K and running strong after the DME swap. The transmission was also shifting perfectly when I sold it. The interior did is share of falling apart though.

Next I got a 2001 528i E39. The car was much more refined that the E34, but it to had a history of too many electrical gremlins. The main reason I sold it was because I did not trust the transmission. I got it with 120K miles, but it had the “lifetime” transmission fluid that I just didn’t trust. Too many people said that once it got to about 125K, it should not be changed. The main thing is that it would shift into OD at about 35-40 mpg. This sucked for driving around town. I could be doing 35 in town and need to accelerate the least little bit and it would downshift. My E34 doesn’t shift into overdrive (or perhaps it is torque converter lockup) until about 53 mph, so I don’t get all of that downshifting in town.

I just wasn’t happy with the E39 and my heart pined away for another E34. I found my current 92 525i with 85K original one owner miles. I paid a premium for it, but it was worth it because I haven’t had a lot of the nagging problems that a lot of people have.

And so, the lover affair continues.

FULL Edit: after reading this it can be confusing so I fixed it

All my cars have some type of story behind them:

1983 Mercedes 300TD sedan - parent hand me down, sold for college tuition

1986 Pontiac Fiero se - Bought semi new. Caught fire like most before recall

1988 Jeep Cherokee limited - recall magnet all I can say about it.

1983 Renualt Alliance 5spd manual aka: French dukes of hazard car -
great crapbox 1st car I bought. Caught air in it,
threw large fried potatoes wedges at people out of it, tossed a few chicks in it.
Then my sister killed it Then I bought the Saab.

1988 Saab 9000t/5spd manual - Bought from a auction for cheap.
Great quick and safe car. Repairs were murder.
Survived a 22 car pileup in it back in 95. Died in Nashville from AC belt catching fire.

1986 VW GTI - Bought in detriot for 500 bucks after the Saab became a roman candle.
Ended up flipping it over 14 times on I-81n in Harrisburg VA... (front to back not a rollover)
and walked away without a scratch. I guess that's german safety engineering for you

1996 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec/BCNR33 - Bought new and had imported to canada.
It sat in Vancouver for 15 years for it was my car up there when visiting my father.
During that time I had the gtr modified and was trying to get it federalized.
However due to the Motorex scandal I couldn't get it federalized for a longtime.
It was finally federalized last year, imported and sold in atlanta for a stupid amount of money

1983 Plymouth Acclaim - A good DD that I bought after the GTi miracle but magnet for rust.
It's somewhere in a Jersey salvage yard

1996 Audi A4 2.8 - bought it from a auction after Acclaim was retired, but was plagued with stupid issues.
Sold it for the Legend and rent money.

1991 Acura Legend LS coupe - crap box I bought after the engine seized on the Audi.
Left me and my 28 month old son (At the time) stranded at night on the side of the highway in Cotton,TN.
Will never buy an auto acura or honda again. Bought my 1st BMW after this one.

1986 BMW 325es/5spd - 1st bimmer (lightly modified) I bought.
Travelled from GA to DC to pick it up. loved it but sold it for my 1st e34

1992 BMW 535i/5 - bought from a friend after I sold my e30.
Loved it but totalled from rollover during a freak ice storm in Atlanta.

2001 MB S500 - Bought certified preowned as a second car, decent family car, but sold to return to NJ.

1989 BMW 535i/5 - current DD, restored it from a POS to a real nice car, sold it, bought it back,
and soon to be boosted

Yeah Sled has the ultimate list and possibly telling his age too.

Not to be picky, but if your 300D was a sedan, it was not a 300TD, which is the wagon. I've owned a couple W123 models ... they're boats, but bulletproof and easy to work on. Theoretically, you could drive one without a working alternator or even a battery. The fuel injection and pump are totally mechanical.

My wife had one of these when we got married. The 5-speed wasn't bad, but I remember that the hand brake button shot out of the handle when I tried to use it. AMC also used two different oil filter fittings on the engine, SAE and metric. If you bought a filter at a parts store without knowing that, you ran the risk of having the filter blow off while you were driving down the road. A lot of Alliances died that way. Too bad -- the car had some great French touches, like the horn button on the turn signal lever, and terrific seats. Build quality was typical AMC, tho.

I had the list in another post. Once I found the old post, I cut pasted and updated.

That is over a LOT of years.... getting close to 30 now I used to keep them 3-5 years and had about 6 at any given time for about 10 years. Just know that if I won the lotto, I would make soild, informed choices

My first e34 535 was a 91 and trans went out at 375,000mi. I just got another e34 about 2 months ago and really wishing I would have waited to find a e30. A e30 is one of the most fun cars to drive. And they are built like tanks!! I think the e34 is going up for sale after fest this weekend.

What about owning a E30 with a E34 motor? There's no option for that. I get the best of all worlds

My 3rd E30
Owned 2 E36's

By far my current E30 with the M30B35 is the best out of all of them. Perfect blend of power, handling, and looks. I've also owned 24 other cars in the 11 short years I've been driving. By far BMW's have always been my favorites, and I own a 79' Trans am 10th anniversary (I don't even really drive it anymore since I did the bimmer engine swap).

I have a fairly accurate list too...

'72 Ford Ranch Wagon, circa 1984
'75 Volvo 164E
'77 Pontiac Trans Am, 455
'86 Bronco 2
'85 Honda Accord
'89 Ford F250
'89 Nissan PU
'72 Chev Monte Carlo
'81 ChevMonte Carlo turbo
'88 Honda Accord
'89 Isuzu Trooper
'84 BMW 318i circa 1994
'90 Chev Suburban

'71 Buick GS455
'72 Chev Nova 383
'04 Porsche Cayenne S (new)
'06 Subie WRX (new)
'92 BMW 535i (current)

I have also had trucks, but they aren't as exciting on a car list.
'99 F350 new
'01 Chev 2500hd new
'03 Chev 3500hd new
'03 Dodge 3500 x2 new
'05 Dodge 3500 new
'06 Dodge 3500 new

And a few big trucks
'94 Frieghtliner FLD 120
'92 Peterbuilt 387
'01 Mack CH613 (new)

Just the Beemer, the big Dodge and a couple of snowmobiles left. I am currently trying to figure out how to get my hands on a big MB UNIMOG and base a business around it. Most US sellers have insane expectations of value, and importation is either expensive or painfully conveluted if you try it yourself, usually a mix of both.

My BMW was to be a commuter but, for the last year I have had a free ride to work and the car mostly sits. It is very nice to have a 4-door that is fast and fun. It gets double the milage of the truck too so it serves us well on road trips. Last summer was 3000 miles round trip to Minnesota and back, four people and luggage. I went straight through on the way there, about 18 hrs with a 71 mph average speed These are great cars, and strangely, after all these years, my first 5'er

Now thats a bad ass ride

my list
92 Toyota MR2
96 Mitsu 3000GT TT swapped
86 Toyota Corolla GTS
92 Bmw 525i

of all the cars the Mr2 was by far my favourite. its such a fantastic ride. Mine was red with T tops. I loved that car so much and even though its been almost 10 years since i owned it Its the one car I miss more than any other.

The AE86 was pretty fun too.

i bought my e34to get me through school spent 600.00 to buy it cause the guy couldnt get it to idle. i just replugged in the iac hose and ive been driving it the last 3 months. Get in start the car get to class then bring me home. its without a doubt the best car for someone in school. my 86 all though fun was pretty frustrating it was very stiff, and loud and smelled of gasoline and exhaust constantly, plus the attention it drew.

The E34 get in turn on the heated seats and enjoy the drive home. What more could you ask for in a daily driver

E34 Driver demographic survey.. Who drives e34's today?

I'm 35 year old toolmaker. First BMW. Never really considered one but got a great deal. I am very pleased with my 525. My next car will be a 540. My previous cars.

1. '87 mercury topaz. Three different shades of faded blue. First car 1994.

2. 92 Isuzu amigo. Flipped end over end in 96

3. 94 ranger extended cab 4.0. Traded

4. 95 jeep wrangler 4.0, best toy ever but after ten years of d.d was sick of it.

5. 2004 accord 2dr bought to drive instead of jeep in winter.

6. Sold both and got a 04 integra type r

7. 73 nova ss. Sold to buy wife's engagement ring.

8. Sold integra and got 02 mustang gt

9. When we found out we were having second child, mustang traded for 09 Ford Flex SEL AWD. Seats 7 tows 5000 lbs. and rides smoother than anything I've ever driven. Zero sportiness though.

10. I got stuck with wife's former civic sedan. Worst 2 years of my vehicle life.

11. Sold civic bought a 02 Nissan frontier crew S/C. Super charged 3.0 pretty torquey but 14mpg. Sold.

12. 95 525i 148k purchased with intent to resale and make a profit . Decided to keep because I like more than I expected. it is comfortable for whole family, gets 25mpg, and people can't believe it's almost 20 years old.

My first beamer was a 1989 528 e34. Beautiful car in great shape and a lot of fun to drive. The car literally saved my life when someone swerved into my lane going the opposite direction and I collided with them at a high rate of speed. The front of the car was gone but the cabin remained completely intact. My next car was a 2000 328i E46 that I loved. Drove it for over 5 years and put 75000 miles on it before I sold it for a Toyota SUV (My daughter was born). Couldn't keep away and bought my present E34 1995 525i for a couple thousand the next year. Looks and runs great but I really want to get a 540i E34 6speed next but I can't find one ANYWHERE in Florida for sale. I have grown to love the E34. The classic BMW look with a slightly aggressive features.

Glad you were driving the Bimmer. The wife of a local MD had a similar experience of a head-on collision in her BMW and she came away pretty unscathed as well.

I too have a long lasting love affair with the E34.

Hmmm, A," has a BMW has saved your life before.?" poll sounds cool.. Im in that club too.. Rolled my first e36 4x from 110+.. Windows were down, slapped my head on the ground i guess woke up 2 minutes after the crash.. Was just pissed about the car, witch was still running after the crash hahaha!!!! Got 5 staples in my head and drove a friends car home..

I had it towed back to my house and took everything could off and built a dakar yellow e36 out of it..

i crashed my E34 at one stage, it was fine just a smashed healight and cracked grill piece. The Integra was C shaped...

Actually that's hitting the curb going around a corner in a 35 mph zone @ 3 am, .03 miles from where i lived.. clip the curb and it rolled 4x and hit a wall at an angle it skipped off the wall and spun around 1 1/2 times then came to a stop... still running.

hours after my first chip install actually.. hahaha takes me back.. So i call the guy who sold me the chip, and buy his car (yellow e36)

He used it on a down payment on a 99 M3, witch he totaled soon after.. hahaha i trust BMW with my life not even an air bag went off..

A, if you are out there hit me up..

Ps - 371 views and 14 people took the survey means 357 of you suck.. it takes 5 seconds.. only like 3% of you have time or what?

371 people taking the survey is decent data..
