Question Whats your take on this X5, is it an easy fix?

I currently have a 2000 328i and was looking to upgrade to a 2002 or 2003 model. and came across this suv:

2003 BMW X5 4.4 SILVER ON TAN
Car has a electrical issue. Gauges don't work might be something simple as a fuse. Its a $8000.00 car if you can fix it. The car runs strong. Sometimes it shuts off. I dont have time to fix it. IF you have any interest in this car, i'm only interested in a quick sale. I don't know the history on it. Its 120,000miles. some minor body damage on the drivers door and bumper. Price is $4,999.00

it looks good in pictures nothing broken or dent(except the dent on drivers door which I can fix myself), the only problem as he started is the electrical system, is this an expensive fix or a headache? if its an easy fix what $ are we looking at, new computer with new gauges, new wires that go to the gauges. I doubt its the fuse, he cant be that lazy to check the fuses. Some of you here are pros and could give me a better answer.

Sounds like somebody bought a "cheap" X5 and when they ran out of patience and or money fixing the issues decided to cut their losses and run. Without knowing exactly what the seller means by "gauges don't work" and "sometimes it shut down" I would not want to "pass the bill to know what is in it".

Is this NJ car? well after Sandy I am leery buying car originating from NJ (no offense); if it's been under water no way to fix electical problems.
On side note, this is very common, after hurricane, major flooding etc; on local newspaper a couple bought a prestine low-mileage used car which gave them nothing but problems here in Seattle, turned out the car was from New-Orleans! (right after Katrina).

A long time ago a cousin who was in the used car business told me "There is no such thing as a cheap used BMW."

I had forgotten about the NJ flooding. Seems like the whole used car fleet around the country is now poisoned until these "flood victims" are all in the wrecker's yard .

If you're willing to pay that much for a headache i can tell you that you can just as easily hit your head against a brick wall for free
Never buy any car where to seller is "unaware" of the problem. They almost are always aware, just not willing to disclose.

thank you all for the input. I now believe it was flooded by Sandy, it makes the most sense.

I owned a 03 X5 3.0, owned it for 8 proud years, saved my life twice, but it was just expensive to maintain especially its electrical systems =_=.

If you are going to be putting that amount of money down, have you considered leasing?
