They are different on my E39, but here is what I have seen:
For pre-2001 only with old-style fog lights -Use a small flat-head screwdriver to move the center pin of the 2 expanding rivets out a couple millimeters. -Use needle-nose pliers to pull it straight down and out. -Use the screwdriver again to pry out the body of the expanding rivet if they are still stuck in place. -When both rivets are removed, the grill section should rotate downwards so pull from the top outwards and it should simply remove. -Then it's (2) small bolts (6mm?) and the foglight should be free. ![]() Images from http://www.540isport.com/DIYfoglamp.htm# |

I just changed my fog lights and maybe its a cheat...but I simply parked on an angle up a driveway and then turn the wheels full lock left or right and just reached in there and removed the bulb. This may work for you too.
So to reach the driver side fog light, I turned the wheel full lock to the right parked half way up the driveway and I was able to reach the light twist and pull out replace and the the same for the passenger side by locking the wheel to the left. |

I have the circular fog lights. Does it make a difference? I would think access would be the same but I dont know. Sorry if my 2 cents were worthless. |

I just accomplished this on my 2001 530i with round fog lights...works exactly the same.
No need to jack the car, all access is from the front...except for moving the actual light out then in. Thanks, and 6mm is correct. |
