New 330i ZHP getting lousy mileage

I was getting between 360 and 450+ per tank on my manual 325Ci. The manual 330i with 1700 miles is lucky to get 300 miles per tank at 90% highway

I broke in both engines the same way, and I drive the same way as I did in the 325. I have no performance mods. At this rate I should have just got an S4.

I thought it might be winter fuel related, but my 325 with 52K was doing fine in Dec. And it's not a small engine vs. big engine b/c the 330i EPA range is 21/30 mpg. Unless the EPA numbers are grossly inaccurate as in the hybrid Toyotas, I'm at a loss.

Is this 39.2 DME related Anyone else getting 300 miles or less from their ZHP?

Haha, you should see the mileage I got at the track. I think I managed 10mpg for one whole tank. Definitely had to refuel more than my friend with his 98 M3.

In aggressive city/hwy driving mix (approx 70% city) I get around 17-18mpg.

Frankly, I could not care less...

I get about 18 - 22, mostly city driving, and very heavy use of the pedals. Like others have said, I wasn't really too concerned about the gas mileage. I bought the car because it's so much fun to drive. If mileage were a concern I'd have gotten a hybred, and had the family bury me in a plot with a view, because driving something like that would have just killed me...

I refill my gas tank at about 270 miles with 1 gallon left. The overall gas mileage for my car since new (10,000 miles) is 18.5 miles per gallon. This has been mostly city driving. In my out of town trips of pure freeway driving I have been able to get about 360 miles out of a tank. Your mileage will increase as the engine becomes less tight with additional mileage.

You must have had a "special" 325. My 318ti with the A/C on gave me 21 MPG for the same kind of normal driving as my 330i.

That is what I've noticed too, cruise control is more economical than the right feet.

I'm surprised that a ZHP gets that much worse mileage than a standard 330. On long highway trips with around 75 mph average, I see over 30mpg on the OBC, with results backed up by manual calculations; range indicated upwards of 450 miles. Even in Europe with a green engine, I averaged 25.5 mpg with a mix of city driving and very high speed Autobahn/Autoroute driving.

(I'm a little late joining in, but...)

I don't have the ZHP, only a normal 330Ci (6M). I drive about 50% "surburban" roads and 50% highway (If Atlanta's Interstates could be called "highways"). I average 26 - 27 mpg (according to the OBC) with this mix. On pure 'highway", I'll get 32 - 33 mpg at 70 - 75 mph. I do tend to take it easy, and don't wind it out going up through the gears very often, so that helps. Of course the lower gearing of the ZHP is going to impact your mileage some also, unless you shift it a little earlier to compensate for that.

That's no excuse. I've got the 18" type 71's, which IIRC are heavier than the type 135s. I would expect the different rear end to make a little difference, but not that much. I loose less than 2mpg from shifting from 6th to 5th, which would still give me a range over 400 miles.

my 330i and 330ci both got 25 mpg combined but the 330i PP I just got rid of got 21-22 mpg. I also noticed this difference.

I've noticed a great variation city versus highway driving in both the 330 (ZHP) and the S4. 330 is noticibly better on gas then the S4 in both situatuions but more noticible in city/mixed driving. In purely city type driving where I am pretty much trying to make good time (always) I get about 14-16 MPG in the S4 where I'm more like 18-20 in the 330. There are times when I accelerate hard in the S4 to cross a very busy street and such where I look down and it seems that the gas gauge is dropping before my eyes! On the highway I haven't calculated my mileage in the 330 but I get noticibly more per tank - well over 300 miles I'm sure of that...and the S4 makes a dramatic improvement as well - even when there are 4 of us in the car - full of luggage and where I'm cruising 80-110 mph as we did returning from the Poconos just before New Years (less then 4 hrs door to door...Strasborg PA to N VA [near Dulles airport]). Got about 26 MPG - which I'm quite happy with. The 330 seems noticibly stingier in all occasions. Unlike the predictions though - I'm finding my mileage is not as good now (6600 miles on the odo) then it was initially....perhaps I'm pushing it harder 9again - always....!)...don't know...

My 'normal driving' in my 323ci gets me about 22-24mpg. Your 'normal driving' must be quite different than mine especially since I usually get between 27-29mpg in my wife's 318i.

My new 330i ZHP is also getting lousy mileage. Only have 1500 miles on it so far, but I'm averaging 16-17 mpg per tank, according to the OBC. Hopefully this will improve.

Same here. I want to see 500 from a tank, but it would probably require the cruise set at 55mph and no headwind. Back when I had my Saturn, I'd gotten as high as 42 mpg with an 80mph average (heading east), but going west the mileage was always 3-5 mpg worse.

With my 330Ci 6spd, I've seen as high as 33 mpg according to OBC with cruise at 70mph on level ground, but haven't been able to drive that slow for any length of time. Still, I can't wait for spring to try some long trips (no snows=no drive this time of year).

Filled the 330 today and got 20 mpg all city driving. Last summer out west got around 26 all highway, lots of mountains and lots of over 100. I'm happy with that. Sure, my ti got 30 highway with the AC on...but that's comparing apples to oranges.

My `04 ZHP Coupe gets between 20-24 mpg with 50/50 mixed city/highway driving....identical to my `99 528i SP.
War Story:
Back in `78, during the second Opec-inspired gas crisis, my landlord bought a new VW Rabbit, hoping to better his long-commute mileage compared to his old AMC wagon. He owned two houses, side by side....I rented one, and he lived in the other with his wife and infant son. He always parked his car in my driveway, as there was considerably more room.Anyway, he started bragging (a lot) about the mileage in the new Rabbit, and after a month or so, I decided to have some fun with him....every couple of nights, I would go out to the driveway, and clandestinely add a quart or two of gas to his tank....he was astounded by his new car`s incredible mileage....over a few weeks, I increased the amounts, until he was "getting" 84 miles per gallon. Then, one night, I began siphoning gas *out*, a few gallons at a clip....he was depressed, his mileage had fallen to 18 mpg....then, his wife told me that he had called the dealer to complain. Seems that after the SA heard the complaint, he put the conversation on speaker phone, and everyone in the place was howling with laughter over "the guy getting 84 mpg from a Rabbit"....I never told him the *real* problem....

Regards,
Bob
