E90 engine performance?

Just wondering aloud here, but has anyone noticed that the e90 330 has almost the same 0-100km/h times of 6.3s as the e46 330 zhp. This is despite the e90 engine being valvetronic and putting out more at 255hp/220lbft vs. the e46 zhp's 235/222. The transmision is the same, at least I think. The weight is the same. The zhp 18" wheels may even be heavier.

So, where is the real-world performance improvement of the e90 engine?

It's probably gearing, and the 0-60 times may not be accurate.

Didn't the E90 avoid weight gain by taking out the spare? Otherwise it would be heavier.

Y E S ! They go on about engine weight savings etc but acceleration numbers are very close It is probably because of extra overall weight since the car is wider, taller and longer than E46.

Ah, this old chestnut . If only tenths of a second here and there were actually that important. Since none of us is racing in F1/ETCC/CART etc., they aren't.

So, where is the real-world performance improvement of the e90 engine?

(1) The ZHP with its engine/drivetrain tweaks is not sold everywhere
(2) comparison with the ZHP is largely anomalous
(3) The E90's performance will be available to all markets, not just North America's
(4) and the gearing is taller...

... so the benefits will be in economy, emissions and refinement, not drag times. If the car has the same performance as the outgoing model (and it's likely to at least match the outgoing, regular 330i) but with 10% better economy and lower emissions, then there is a clear benefit.

The most profit does not lie in M. When it comes to 3 series for instance it is in, at least in the US, in 325. In Europe it's in diesel models.

Overall, yes. But I think he's saying that the M division gives BMW the best rate of return of any of it's product lines. And it does create a halo effect for the whole brand.
