Help diagnose a weird noise on hard acceleration

Background info:

I have an '03 330i sport with Step. It has almost 30k miles, and is due for Inspection in the next couple weeks and will raise the issue with them. Oil level is fine.

Here's the problem:

On hard acceleration my car makes a strange grinding noise.
Hard to explain what it sounds like but its like a very fast rattle, coming from the front of the car. Its kind of like a grinding sound. I have only started hearing it recently and it is not apparent under normal acceleration. Last night I tried to figure which gears and at what RPMs I could reproduce it and I mostly hear it in 3rd gear. The noise lasts for maybe 1-2 seconds around 3000-3500rpm and then shows up again between 5000-6500rpm right before the step automatically shifts. I haven't noticed it as much in higher gears because I don't get up to higher rpms in 4th and 5th gears as much.

The noise doesn't sound normal to me and I can't remember having it when I first got the car. Is it normal? I would think the engine shouldn't be making these noises especially before the redline range.

Any ideas about what this could possibly be? Let me know if I can provide any more info that would help. Thanks!

What gas are you using?

Your discription could easily be light pinging, despite the knock sensors. I have heard a single ping on my 330i on sudden throttle opening, but no sustained noise. I use 91 octane Chevron purchsed in the Penasquitos area, so we may be stuck using the same gas. What gas are you using?

Do you hear the noise as you sweep through the RPM ranges quoted from low speed, or if you start accelerate hard in that range?

Thanks for the reply...

I'm using 91 octane Chevron as well usually purchased at the Carmel Valley Chevron but also regularly fill up at Chevron's in Los Angeles. This problem has persisted no matter what tank of gas has been in there.

I hear the noise if I sweep through the RPM ranges if I'm understanding what you're asking.

Also this grinding noise occurs when the engine is warmed up sufficiently... I don't make a habit of winding the engine up past 3000-3500rpm max until I've been driving for 15 minutes at least... Doesn't get too cold here in San Diego, usually 55 F at the lowest lately near the coast.

I'm going to make an appointment for the 30K Inspection... Been putting off getting some other stuff dealt with too (rattles coming from the rear seat area, and also a different noise when I accelerate from a low speed.). Hopefully they can fix it all.

And exhaust system. It may be rubbing or a heat shield may be loose and resonating at particular engine speeds.
