E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

Advice needed: 318 vs 325

Hi.

I've always been a huge fan of the BMW E30 body style. Now that i've saved up enough money (I'm a student), I've decided to buy my first! I'm looking to spend about $2000-$2700.

My question to all of you experts, could you please give me some advice on whether it would be "better" to get a 325 or a 318?

I want to fix it up as much as possible, with engine upgrades, etc. Should I choose the 325 for the power, or the 318 for the lightweight of the car? Which is overall the better car in terms of handling (i'm probably going to lower it), weight distribution, reliability, etc.?

Any and all input is GREATLY appreciated!

I've been trying my best to gather as much info as possible on the subject and am stuck!

Thanks,
T

They both have plusses and minuses. The 325 does have more power. You need to drive both to see if you like the 318.
The 325 has a timing belt, vs. the 318's timing chain; less maintenance there. The early 318s had a profile gasket issue. Early 318s had rear drum brakes. That's all that's leaping to mind now...

Oh, and there's a difference between the 325i and 325e. I had the latter, and it was a good commuter - fuel-efficient and torquey (low-redline 2.7L engine).

It's kinda difficult to find decent examples of either. I'd look at all the e30s I could, you'll find the right one when you find the right one, whether it's a 6 or a 4.

I have a 325es and while I love it and commute 70 miles round trip daily, I do wish for more power that a 325is or a computer chip could bring.

Chips make a huge difference on your 325es, something like 25hp and 30lb/ft of torque. Why aren't you doing one?

There are vast amounts of information out there. Do a search on Google. I had a 325i and loved it. Great rush as you hit the power band. Check for the usuals like the rear subframe bushings, timing belts, fuel lines, brake lines, etc... Things can add up quick. Find a good mechanic who knows their stuff on the E30 and inspect inspect inspect! Personally, I would much rather get a 325 than the 318...

me too have been looking at 318 and 325is.

I did drive both, the pickup on the 318 is not bad for an 4, but it feels like it ran out of steam after 5k, but the turn in is better than the 325, the 318 does feel lighter on its feet.

like previous post, just look at both, if you find a right one it is the right one.
