Evading the Island Police

Yesterday on the Island of Curacao in the Caribbean, this 22 year old boy tried to evade a police check point and ended up in someone's house... the house of my aunts neighbor...

Hope all were ok, including the idiot in the X...having been to C three times, I wonder what one "does" with an X on that fine lil'island: it's about 35 miles from end to end and averages about 5 miles wide. Sorta like having a nuclear powered chain saw...

There are some beautiful spots in the parks or for shore driving where a rental jeep helps, but that X doesn't look like it's left the pavement, except for that excursion in the pic.

Maybe it belonged to someone in US. Stolen, painted and shipped to island.

Probably loaded the coke on the wrong side of the car...

I've been to the Caribbean quite a few times with my family, and from time to time you see a nice car like that. And then, of course, you wonder what kind of illegal thing the person is doing to get the money to buy a car like that there. (That's not to say that there aren't honest, law abiding people in the Caribbean with money... The owner of the Spice Island Inn on Grenada owns either a 730i or a 730d, I cant remember.) Can you imagine all the taxes and fees involved with buying, owning, and maintaining a car like that on some remote island?

My father's family is from there, old trading family going back to the 1700's. They steal a lot of cars in Europe and the US and ship them in containers to those Islands... I lived there for about a year and drove a 325cic back in 1995, I was a novelty driving around with the top down... people asked me to give them my car...

They probably don't pay taxes on them and when they import them also order them tax free...
Ofcourse there are lots of rich people living there but maintaining a BMW or Mercedes is not cheap as you said..

Forget the driver... I have sympathy for the car.

I haven't been to Curacao, but I've spent time in Sint Maarten and St. Barts. I think a BMW of any kind would be most unfortunate to be there. The roads are horrible. A Toyota pickup would probably be the best, or a Mitsu Pajero--and old, at that. I remember renting a car at the airport there and being asked, "Do you want the car with a/c or the car with a radio?"
