Tailgate difficult to close

Has anyone else found it hard to close the tailgate properly? I had to really slam hard to close the gate. I am afraid I will break the glass/door at some point. This can't be right. Fortunately there is a door open warning light on dash that tells you, I have had to get out and reshut the gate several times in the last couple of days.

This is the only complaint on this car so far. Everything else is great. Computer tells me I am getting 20 MPG so far :-)

It happens to me too but it has not been a problem. Maybe the car is still too new, I wish they would have installed the automatic closing tailgate. My BMW 740i trunk closes automatic and so does my 1990 Camaro hatchback. I'm sure and X3 would have been worthy of such a device. We shouldn't have to slam our tailgates

Yes, I too have to sort of slam mine to close. I only have 3K miles & think the seals are still breaking in. Whatever you do don't have the dealer adjust the latch. If the latch gets adjusted before the seals are broken in it will never shut right.

Yeah, you would think after all of the issues with the X5 rear latch they would have included the X3 with the soft close latch like on the 2004+ X5s.

I also found on the test car we drove my wife pointed out that the tailgate was little difficult to close. Maybe it was very new.. Give it time.

The 04's don't have a warning light on the dash, but if the hatch isn't closed, the rear inside lights will stay on. That's usually how I notice the problem--I'll notice the light on in my rearview mirror. Not an ideal solution...

I don't have a problem with it. I've got 11k on my car, so maybe it's over the so-called break in period for something like that.

I have experienced this problem too.
