My wife was driving.. About a nickel shaped "star" with a crack coming off of it. I told her we got the Sport package, just so she could dodge those projectiles...
Anyway, State Farm says replace it... The dealer recommended a local glass shop, and they are going to use genuine BMW glass..
They say they have to keep it overnight, because BMWs use a special urethane that has to cure overnight..
Anything else I should be looking out for? I take it in next week.
If you have a rain sensor (auto wipers), make sure the dealer/installer knows and handles it properly. (The rain sensor is integrated with the glass.) :dunno:
Unfortunately, I've had to have windshields replaced on a couple of cars due to rock hits. The last was my '99 Passat. A "reputable" glass shop used OEM glass but had to do it over again because they positioned the glass incorrectly. Pay close attention to the top of the windshield where it meets the roof and be sure they put it back the same way, same distance, etc. Also they got black glue on my "A" pillar but were able to clean it off. Sometimes a factory seal or weatherstripping is destroyed when they remove the windshield and they don't replace it. On another of my cars, I always heard more road noise after the windshield was replaced because of that issue. I hate having windshields replaced -- good luck!
I went through the same thing about a yr ago....I had a stone chip I should of got repaired but was lazy and eventually it cracked bad. I did some research and talked to a bunch of people. BMW glass isn't better per say. BMW doesn't make glass they buy glass just like a glass repair company will. Most of them (except safelite (stay away from them) use a windshield that meets or exceeds OEM specs. I didn't get a BMW windshield and to be honest this one is holding up much better. The BMW factory one was so soft it had ugly pitts in it from stones....this one is holding up much better.
