2005 325i - break in period?

How fast should I go the first 500/1000 miles? Is there a break in period?

I think this is covered in the owner's manual or some of the other new car documentation. Definitely read through that -- it'll save you some flames here in the forum and let you in on lots of other interesting features For my '05 330i, the break-in was 1,250 miles where you stay below 100 mph and 4500 rpm. I'm sure it's similar if not identical for the 325.

This is why I bring it up. I read that in the owners manual also but when I was talking to the salesguy, I asked him specifically and he tried to tell me that there was no true burn in period with new bmw's these days, as long as I didn't use cruise control for the first 1000 miles. So I wasn't sure if the manual was just being cautious just to be...or if the salesman was lying to me?

Soooooo....how bad would it be if I already went over 100 within the first 500 miles?

I'm never quite sure when the sales critters are being serious or just trying to yank my chain. So I'd go with what's in the manual. 1200 miles, under 100 mph, under 4500 rpm, vary your rpms a lot (eg no cruise control), etc., etc., etc. Would it really hurt you to do the breakin that way? While it may or may not be required, it certainly wouldn't hurt. (Well, it shouldn't hurt the car.... But it may drive you insane not being able to let her rip for a while ).

Just don't make a habit of it, and don't go too far over 100 and 4500 rpm.

Are you serious, here in the US?

Never listen to what a salesman says if it contradicts official BMW info. If something goes wrong with your car his word will be worth zilch when you try to get BMW to repair for damage you caused by not following BMW's written information.
