2 series recall

After waiting 14 months my 240 was supposed to be ready to be picked up today,I just called and asked if it was ready and I was told it's still up in Georgia because of an instrument cluster recall .Is there Devine intervention at work here telling me not to buy this car.Ill probably get it now at the 15 month mark now.I can't believe all that's happening to me with this purchase. Has anyone else been affected by this recall or is it just b/s and its only my car again?.

I'll do you one better. Our dealer told us we could pick up our new car today, so we drive over there to pick it up. We even sat in the car and went over all the usual new car procedures, including setting up Apple CarPlay and configuring one of the keys. Then when we went in to handle the financing, the dealer comes up to us and tells us we can't take the car home because of a new recall that just showed up on their computer that isn't even in the NHTSA computers yet. They had run the recall procedures earlier in the day with the car coming up clean.

The recall, apparently, requires a software update for the instrument cluster. Apparently BMW puts a stop ship on every vehicle that needs to be fixed, so we were not able to drive the car home, despite them having given us the keys and having begun all the paperwork to take it home.

Now we have no idea when we can actually take our car home. They're going to check the service department on Monday to see if they have access to the software update. If so, we can probably take the car home pretty soon, but knowing the bureaucracy behind these things, who knows?

It feels like Charlie Brown and Lucy with Lucy pulling the football away. Who issues recall notices late on a Saturday night?!?!?!?

Here's a brief description of the recall from the sheet they printed out for us:

Stop Code: STOP012542
Defect Description: B621617 Recall: Instrument Panel Display - Do not retail or deliver
Bulletin Number: B62 16 17
Recall Number: 17V-XXX
Campaign Status: 00-Open

I have no idea what any of those codes mean. If anyone has any experience with them, please chime in.

Edit: I would post a picture of the recall notice they gave us, but apparently you can't post pictures here without first uploading it to some website since it only takes a URL.

You don't have a high enough post count yet to be able to post pictures directly to the site. I think that turns on after about 100 posts.

Yes, it is true.

Go back and read what I wrote: "... post pictures directly to the site", using the "Manage Attachment" function in the posting screen. That puts the pictures on the site itself, where they won't show up as broken links when an embedded image from an external site goes away some time down the road.

14 months is insane. 14 weeks is even excessive. Or did you mean 14 weeks?

So good news for all of you who are waiting on a 2018 M240i in the short term. The dealer emailed me today to say they have the software update in house and that we should be able to pick up the car tomorrow. We'll have to re-sign all the paperwork, but that's ok. So instead of having the car Saturday, we'll get it Wednesday.

I don't know for sure, but there's another thread started by Living_Dead where he picked up his 2017 M240i yesterday with no trouble and no recall was mentioned. It's possible they had the software update, but I'm inclined to think it's a 2018 issue only.

I'm not even sure if it covers 230i's.

Wow Brother, I'd be pissed. Dunno how you are paying for yours (cash, loan or a lease). Mine was a cash deal back in Oct 2016 and I got mine in Dec 2016...So owned mine for a year as a current year car.

If I'd have been in your situation, the final price would have to be negotiated way down as my new car is now a clearance model (of end of year model in dealer speak) or I would tell the dealer to keep it and order me a 2018. In my case if I accepted the car as is,when I trade after three years, I'm trading a 4 year old car compared to a 3 year old car (and in effect be losing a year's worth of value). Unless I get the difference up front (now at the time of purchase), I'd not accept the deal.

If it's a lease, I'd still be asking for $ off the price for "pain and suffering" (LOL) and just drive it until the lease is up.

I would expect the dealership to be doing whatever they can to make you happy.
