I have a 1999 323i... how do I know if it is an E36 or E46?

1999 323i
How does one tell? Sorry to sound ignorant, but I am new to all the language (E46 vs E36).
My convertible says 323i and I have seen several 323ic's that are 1999.

All 3 series sedans that are MY 99 are e46's. Coupes and cabrios in '99 were e36's. The e46 is the current body style (until May, when the e90 sedan begins being delivered). Coupe and cabrio production of e46's will continue until the release of the e90 counterpart begins being delivered.
