Warning light - "Increased Emissions"

Shortly after filling the car the message "increased emissions" showed up. I called BMW Service but the young lady that helped me did not know what it meant.

Anybody else have this happen? The car seems to be running okay.

I'll call my dealer in the morning.

I assumed it had something to do with the fuel as it happened 3.4 miles after I filled up.

But - same station I go to on a regular basis.

Thanks for your input.

Is there an easy way to reset the warning message? Or is it a dealer fix?

Should change when the car's happy with the fuel again. They may have had the wrong octane in their premium tank.

From what I remember reading on another board, the increased emissions warning message has to be reset at the dealer. Sometimes the message is logged as a gas cap issue and other times the car's software has to be upgraded in order to prevent future occurrences...

Can be cleared with a ODBI tool. I had this error message come on and cleared with scan tool the message was low coolant temp. Replaced thermostat and problem solved.

Thermostat

Hi,

I am getting the same code, and "Increased Emissions" warning on my 2005 545i.

Upon replacing the thermostat, does the service engine soon light automatically disappear?

From what I understand the ECU has to go through so many cycles before the light will go off. Like 30 to 50 miles

Increased emissions is a generic term and covers many possibilities. You need to scan and get the P - code from an ODBI scan tool first. Could be carbon clogging the air injection system. I had that with the increased emissions code before also. Let's hope that not the situation in your case!

I'm thinking that it's the thermostat due to the poor performance of the heater... plus I'm getting a coolant warning light occasionally as well.

+1, cleared it several times myself in INPA or DIS

Sure you tightened gas cap after filling?
