This is an old thread but I have the same problem in my car now. I never had this issue with any car I had, including 5 past BMW's. It's gotten so bad that it's embarrassing to have anyone drive in the car with me. I've tried all the remedies listed without success. Just made a dealer appt.

I took my vehicle in over the summer for the same musty smell. I was told by the dealer that BMW has changed their view on this matter and it now considered to be related to environmental factors. Therefore, a new micro filter / AC cleaning is not covered under warranty.

Had same issue with my old '97 E92, the evaporator was leaking and had to be replaced, a $3000 repair, luckily under warranty.

Mein Auto:
I had a terrible version of this. The smell was so bad that the entire car smelled musty even when the hvac system was off and the car was stationary.
I ended up buying a pressurized hand pump plant mister, filling it with almost boiling water and ZEP odor control concentrate.
I took out the cabin filter and hooked it around the air plenum so that the mister was aimed at the back of the evap core. Zep foams a lot when its pressurized and mixed with hot water.
I drenched the core until the foam started to back up into the cabin 4X.
Problem gone.
2 different dealerships and 4 trips failed to remedy the issue
