Computer in The X

Hi, finaly it end up with an laptop in the X.
Was thinking about an x-box but after all i did find out that a laptop would be the best choice for what i wanted to do.
1. Play mp3 and get them displayed on the nav screen.
2. Play movies
3. Surf on the internet using my BlueTooth phone as the modem (will put an 3g card in the comp so i dont need the phone for it)

For the mp3 i found out that win amp with the right skin would bring the best screen view and it also can handle DVD and all kinds of format.

With an computer i can also connect an USB Digital TV reciver to get all the digital broadcasted TV channels (only get the free analog and digital with my OEM TV reciver)

The choice on an laptop instead of an stationary comp is that the Lap can handle when you turn on and of the car without damage and its also easy to pull out.

The LapTop is mounted on the back of the rear single seat, just pull the seat down from the rear seat and you got the comp easy (thanks mark_ireland for the idea)

Will put an touch pad between the front seats to controll the computer
http://www.abilityhub.com/mouse/touchpad.htm

Got the TvOnNav solution and the BMW aux input in the glow so i still can have the comp screen on the nav while driving and the sound is connected to the aux to get it in stereo.

When i turn of the car the computer goes into sleep mode after 5 min so it will not drain the battery and with the wake up on mouse option i just have to touch the pad to start it up again.

With the car parked outside i can send mp3's or whatever via my 100mbit wirless network

Looks impressive! What interface/adapter did you use to connect to the nav screen? Have you looked at the Car-x ?
I am also working on a similar project but do not get enough time. I plan on using the I-bus adapter and mounting the laptop in the nav / disc changer area. Plan on putting a 80+gb drive in the laptop to accomodate the mp3s.

I'm well impressed

I love your setup. I'm still working on mine I haven't had any time to do anything with it
How did you fix the laptop to the seat without showing any fixings?
What do you have the nav screen resolution set at?
Did you fix the touchpad or is it handheld?
Well done

That car-X looks great didnt know about it will for sure take a closer look!
Im using the S-video out on my comp. just using a small s-video to composit changer will send a pic of it.

Mark i will send some pics of the fixings.
Well if i will be away from the car for long i just hit the start button in windows and choose shut down.
If not it will go into sleep mode after 5 min and will not drain the battery for a long time.
Will check the resolution settings.

Do you know if the car-x will work on our X5's ?
Where do you connected it to the ibus?

The 2,5" drive is getting cheaper and cheaper so i will also upgrade my drive to an 80 or 100gb.

Wow, that's awesome! That's taking it to the next level! I thought the NAVTV solution was cool, but this is great. I'm not a big fan of MP3's or MPG's, but I like the fact that you can surf the net, check your email etc.

I was thinking about putting in headrest monitors with the screens showing the same display as the NAV screen. If you were to select Sirius radio for e.g., the rear passengers would be able to see the track and artist info. If you played a movie, all screens would show it, and the same with the navigation directions, etc. just never got around to doing it, especially now that I'm busy MODding my 540i

Car-X will work in X5. Here is the link to the document on "How to install Car-X"
If you join the Yahoo group "HackTheIBus" and go to files secion-> MP3 projects you will find the above doc and detail info on Car-X. Car-X software is free. There is also a radar.bin file which has listing of all speedtraps from Speedtrap Exchange which when added warns when approaching a speedtrap.
Another board on Car-X is http://carx.dl.am/. Keep posted.

You can use the Verizon Kyocera KPC650 PCMCIA card for broadband wireless internet access.

DanielB. How do you get the Computer screen to show up on the Nav Screen? Is there a way of making the NAV screen a Touchscreen? What is need in order to do this to the X?

Got the nice solution from TvOnNav www.tvonnav.com !
The TvOnNav got one video in connection so you just go from the Video out from the computer (if you have video out on the comp) to video in on the the tvonnav.
If you allready got the BMW OEM TV module in your X you only need the video cables from Tvonnav if not they got the complete solution.
The audio from the computer you connect to the AUX OEM option from BMW.

Dont know anyway to make the screen a touchscreen (would be nice).

So what you need is the Wires from TVOnNav and the BMW aux input (OEM option from BMW)

Motordavid, im with you. NEVER EVER watch Tv or Video when you driving!!!

Ps. Most LapTops got YC video out (s-vhs) and the tvonnav is composite in.
Then u need this little converter in the pic.

Ok. Sounds good. Now. How do you navigate the screen? Mouse? How? Steering wheel? How do you click on the Computer Icons?

Will also cut up the armrest between the seats and lower the pad a bit and hide the cable.

I guess i could put it in the location of the cupholder correct? I would not want to cut up an armrest in a 4.8is.

What about a bluetooth device????

I have seen a small bluetooth mouse....maybe there is a bluetooth type touchpad somewhere? then you wouldn't need to hide any wires

Think it will fit at the cup holder location, but i still want somewhere to put my cola.
Yea cut it up is not the first thing you think about.
But i think the cover over the cellphone is a pretty cheap spare part.
So when you dont want the touchpad anymore just replace the cover .

Yea mark i will check out for some blue tooth or wireless pad.
