E90 vs S4? Why not E90 vs new A4?

It exceeds the "Fests attachment file size limit and I have no Adobe to edit the pdf.

The BMW is more "luxury-sport" and the Audi feels more "straight-forward sport"?

I've not heard that opinion before. But then again I haven't driven either of these. I agree with the above poster that this doesn't seem like an apples-to-apples comparison.

Interesting that they liked Audi, but started the article by describing the e46 as "soft and limp", and like a "pebble in your shoe". Ouch!

Compare a M3 vs a A4 3.0 and I'd wager the difference in the comparison would be far greater. I'm surprised they held the e90 as close as they did to the S4. They really are meant for 2 different markets.

I can definitely affirm that the e90 330i sport can hold the road incredibly. Having driven, just a few days ago, from Valencia Spain to Madrid on an incredibly windy undulating road at 120+mph pretty much the whole way, the car sticks to the road like poop to the shoe. It was the single most memorable drive in my life. Even beats the 140+ stints on the autobahn and French tollroads.

It does feel more refined, and absorbs bumps better than my e46, but skedaddles better and takes corners at speed like nobody's business. It'll be a fine track car. I can't wait for redelivery. My 2000 miles in europe were priceless.

I wondered the same thing, but then I remembered that they didn't want it to be a 330i cake walk. I suspect that the new 330i would take a "regular" A4's lunch money.

Audi's product stratification is funny, though, with their "S" line, and then their "RS" line. Against which S4 would one compare the M3 (E46 or E90)?

S4 to M3 (would have to be e46 at this point) seems a much better comparison.

In a more apples to apples comparison I think you would compare BMW 325 to A4 2.0T or compare BMW 330 to A4 6 cylinder (can't remember the size, used to be 3.0).

The Audi would look so much better if they would move the wheels to the corners and eliminate that awful overhang.

The only problem here is the the ride comfort in the M3 is nowhere as good as the comfort in the S4 or 330i, and the M3 has only 2 doors. I agree totally with the article in this respect. The M3 is just not as livable day to day for an all around car as the S4 or the 330i. Plus the price is $10 K more than the S4, which is really $10 K more than the 330i.

I agree that the S4/330i comparison is not really fair, but strangely, I was struggling with this choice myself. I chose the 330i, but mostly due to financial reasons and gas prices. It's really a credit to the 330i that people would compare it to the S4. The article said they didn't want to make it too easy for the 330i to win outright, so I think they are paying the 330i a compliment by comparing it to the S4, even if you think they end up preferring the S4. (and I think they imply it's a toss-up).

What it came down to for me was that I could drive about 150 miles further on the same amount of gas in both cars. (10mpg better highway mileage with the 330i). Since MOST of the driving I do is on the highway with little traffic and little stop and go, the 330i made the most sense to me. And I can say that on PCH through Big Sur, the 330i definitely was good enough to keep me entertained! So much fun!

Missed you at the delivery center Lar, I take it you had a good trip?

The car rocks on the Autobahn! How about that weather for the last week of May?

Since this comparo was so close, I would expect the turbo-powered 335i to eat the S4 for breakfast. Can't wait.

Yeah. Sorry we missed you too! We had an 11 am checkout and I was antsy. I got there at 9:15 and was out of there in 25 minutes.

Just came back yesterday. It rocked. put many miles on, but I hit the magic number just over the border of France:

I had great, albeit hot, weather the whole time. It was a memorable vacation, and I had the best drive of my life on the road from Valencia to Madrid. Very undulating and twisty. It was fairly abandoned, and I had seen no police, so I was liberal with the right pedal. Averaged about 120 mph for that leg of the trip. The e90 is an extremely surefooted car at high speeds.

I am so jealous of you guys with the Euro Delivery. Next car I am doing this for sure. I have enough air miles to get both my wife and I there for free, but unfortunately, I didn't have the time to wait for a car to be built or do the trip. Thanks for posting your experiences (and pictures), and letting the rest of us enjoy your trips vicariously.

I have about 900 miles on my car now and I can't wait until 1200!

Nice Larry! Yeah, I didn't get there until about 12:15 PM. I stuck around Munich for a week and I was going to drive to Austria on the second to last day I was there, but I got a bit nervous about it so I took the train. Did a fair amount of driving though, one day I drove to the Starnberger Sea to go swimming because of all of the heat. All-in-all I put on about 500 miles;;;dropped the car off last week on the 31st.

You're right...the E90 is VERY surefooted at high speeds on the Autobahn. I had E46s whipping past me @ like 150mph. Scary sometimes. And the MP3 capability in the Logic 7 really added a nice touch to every drive.......

Good news I received this morning also: Mein Auto is scheduled for arrival at the port on June 19th! Nothing like having an E90 in time for the 4th of July. Talk about your improved E.D. turnaround times.
