It is the body style design; an internal BMW number. For instance, the previous 3 series was the E46. If you search the forums and/or Google some, you can come up with a list of all the prior body styles and their respective production vehicles, if any.

You don't even really need to search at google or here. Just look at the sub forums broken out below each model forum on the main forum listing.

Each sub forum shows the "E" model designator and the years it was in production.

E stands for Entwicklung, which is the german word for Development.

90 is the internal code that's given to the latest 3 Series by BMW.

Let me follow with something else to ponder. It's 2005 but the e90 is a 2006 and therefore isn't it the "current" 3-series? The forum says e46 is 1999 - current, but I beg to differ! E90 is current

Yes, but the Coupe and the Cabriolet is still an E46 and they are still being produced. We will change the dates, when the E92 and E93 is introduced.

Same thing happened during the transition to the E46 from the E36.

In '99 you had an E46 sedan while at the same time the coupe and convertible being produced were E36s. Also the M3 at that time took, what, a 2~3 vacation from production.
