Does anyone know the owner of that M5 touring?

Anyone know the owner of that beautiful daytona violet M5 touring that was on lot? I wanted to talk to him, but never got a chance. If anyone could get me in touch with him, that would be great.

It was sweet. An E34 M5 wagon. I believe he found it in Italy and got it federalized (if I have my story correct).

M5 Touring

Hello everyone,
that was me, and she's actually my daughter's car.
She's commonly known as "Violona" (Big Violet One) and always referred to as an actual person not as an object.
I bought her from a good friend of mine, who'd had her for a few years, in 1999 and she was kept in Rome until last year (that's why she has so many dents and scratches which I'll fix in due course).
Now her home is in OC and she enjoys the wonderful weather and a slow and expensive
rebuild, first mechanical and then the cosmetics.
She's a 1992 (October) production and has quite a story: she was a "Motorsport" car and was specially prepared for the Bologna Motorshow in Dec 1992, where she was exhibited at the BMW stand. She was then turned over to BMW Italia as a demonstrator and used for some press articles (of which I have copy).
Then she was sold and changed hands three time before I got her.
If anyone goes to the weekly 7 to 9 am gathering at Cristal Cove on Saturday I'm often there.
I'm glad you like it: she's quite something to drive and very very enjoyable
and I take her out every day for a spin. Of course she's also a rarity as only 891 were built between 1992 and 1995 all with the 3.8 engine.
It was nice to be there last Saturday and I really enjoyed seeing so many enthusiasts and beautiful cars.

Aha, Tustin. Must be the same one I spotted on Red Hill @ MacArthur a few months ago.

Must have been as I'm frequently around there.
Plus I do not believe there's another DV Touring in CA; there's a black one in LA somewhere and there was a Laguna Green in San Diego that was sold.

Kaz,
I've seen your post and photo.
That was just when I actually got my car from the Company that federalized it, before I got my rear SLS accumulators and hoses changed. It was bouncy and horrible!
My mechanic is just around the corner from there.

I'm SO pissed that missed it. And it was next to that ugly orange thing with all the vents, too.

Gojira-san,
891 total were made from 1992 to 1995 from vin ....BL1000 to BL1943.
In 1994 they got the 18" parallels, the wide kidney and the bigger brakes.
Check the history at http://www.bmwmregistry.com

Beautiful Car.
I understand the costs involved, but how difficult was it to get the 3.8 to pass california smog testing? I'd heard that's the major stumbling block to get these cars on our roads.
Mike

Hey Mike,
actually it has not yet passed the EPA/CARB test "officially" as the Company which is federalizing it has had issues with its lab and it needs to be recertified.
However the tests were run and it passed quite easily.
I had the engine well tuned by my mechanic in Rome before it left: new plugs, new injectors and valve clearances checked, oil and filter and air filter too.
Plus, of course, the Euro cat was exchanged for a US 3.6 one (without this no way it would pass EPA/CARB while it may pass a normal smog perhaps), plus the cold air pump needs to kick in straight away so it is connected do so as you turn the key. It's the cold test which is the most difficult to pass, so they tell me.
I hope that the lab will be ready soon so that I can get this over and done, I hate unfinished business.
Also as soon as all this is done, I can then proceed to get the Euro headlights back on, change the dash (the leather is really warped), re-dye the two front seats (at least),
get rid of all dents, dings and Rome war-zone scratches, plus repair and repaint the front and rear bumper, and also repaint all wheels which are in very bad shape.
What is mind boggling is the cost and the time involved as we are dealing with two governement agencies one for the DOT and one for EPA, plus the rules which are quite strict and not very fair, I think: they do love to make things difficult!!
Any good mechanic would take ten days max to do everything, but this has been going on since last May!!!!!!
I shall spare you any further comments, because I'd inevitably slip into vulgarities.
best wishes
Jaime

Jaime,

I see you attended Bimmerfest with Violona a couple of months back. She is looking good as these are the first pictures (good res) I have seen. Nice to see her coming along.

Take Care,

And catch you on the other forums.

Greg
