Electric Whirr When Driving?

I took delivery of my 6spd E90 325i two weeks ago. All has been great - basically no problems to report of *knock on wood*. I do have a question, though. If I drive through the city with the radio turned down, I can hear a whirr sound in the cabin when I'm riding along, not really heavy on the throttle. It's coming from the engine, but it sounds almost electronical. This is my first brand new car (my prior vehicle was a 98 integra stick) - so I'm not really worried that it's anything out of the ordinary. I'm just chalking it up to being a new car and it's a more modern engine and it's just it's "noise." (Obviously it won't be whisper quiet.) It's something that I won't hear if the radio is fairly loud. Maybe it's just a thing with me knowing its there so I notice it moreso...it's hard to explain.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

My car exhibit the same sound too. I kept telling my wife it sounds like we are driving an electric car. Not that it bothers me. Just wondering if its a problem. If not, I can live with it.

Just a guess here - could it be the water pump, which is electric on the E90 vs. belt-driven on most (all?) other cars? Was it particularly hot, with stop & go traffic when you noticed the sound (causing extra water pumping)?

I have steptronic but I notice a whining sound sometimes when revving the engine. I guess its the flywheel or something spinning down and sometimes you can hear it over the engine noise

Actually, the more gas I give it, the less I hear it. It's when my foot is off - or almost completely off - the throttle I hear it. For example, cruising around town @ 30mph, it's very noticable.

Yes, I agree. Its like during casual city driving, it whirrs like a electric car, when you step on the gas, it growls like a muscle car. My wife likes the sound though! Anyway, as long as its not a problem with the tranny or anything, I can live with it.

Whirr sound

I had this sound on my 2000 Z3 with the 2.5L. Yesterday the water pump blew the fan shaft broke the fan went foward and destroyed the radiater the fan blades and god knows what this will cost. Not sure if it was the fan clutch that was the problem or the water pump

This sounds like the signature engine whine of the E90 that is loved by many! Search this board and others and you'll see what I mean. It is acting and sounding like a real sports car with a great sounding engine. I noticed it when I test drove the car and found it "interesting" but have since come to love it.

Yeah, I hear it on my 330 also. It may be the way the new intakes operate, and even the 325 (1 stage) has a completely re-designed one.
It would explain why it sounds in time with engine speed.
