Coolant temperature sensor

I own a 1996 328IC. I'm having problem when the light inside the panel temperature gauge came on on the red light. The diagnostic test says AO (Coolant Temperature Sensor). I am wondering if the termostat is bad or something else? Help is bably needed since this is new world to me. Thanks!
