performance chip

I am new here but from previous project cars i can probably guess that this has been asked a million times and a lot of people are tired of hearing abut them but the question is simply "Do they work"? I would assume that all they do is advance ignition timing and take advantage of 91-93 octane. If that it the case then there is obviously no reason why they would not work. Please induldge me.

Hi. For some reference I just put one of the $40 ebay chips in my 1990 535 and it made an immediate and strong difference! I have way more power down low and the full throttle acceleration up to about 100mph (the fastest I've gone in this car) is noticeably faster! It really is a good deal. Obviously it doesn't give 45 hp like the ads state but I would guess it's an easy 20 more horsepower.

I did the same...and orders a chip from x_gen_performance@yahoo.com. My MPG improved in addition to the acceleration, but the "check engine" light came on. The chip developer said this is somewhat common, but did not imply it happens all the time. Note: I did not notice any difference using 87 octane and 91 octane and my engine is running perfectly.... or at least I think so since I am getting 17 city and 26 hwy MPG.

That's who I got mine from. I'm definitely happy with the results. I have to use premium though.

I bought a Dinan. I was going debating between an ebay special or a conforti chip but found a dinan with my ecu code for $125 so I snagged it. Should be here in a few days so i will get it installed this weekend.

Please tell us your MPG and what happens if you don't use premium.

I haven't tried anything but premium, I'm scared to because my car has pretty high mileage and enough problems already. Before the chip I got roughly 15mpg now I get about 16.5. I just recently got the car and I'm pretty sure it needs a tune-up seeing as it gets such poor gas mileage (I think?) and it doesn't idle perfectly smooth.
Eventually I do want to get am EAT chip and see if that makes a substantial difference over the ebay $40 special.

I put the Dinan chip in today and immediately the CEL cam on What a bummer, i figured a company like dinan would be able to bypass something like that. i will call them monday and see if ther eis a solution.

Eat chips are not $40 but they are properly designed with your car in mind, not sales volume. What do you guys do when your CEL comes on?
ignore it?
do you have a tool?

...Other than the CEL I like the way my car ran, sound, and the MPG improvement I got. However, I still took the chip out because II don't like seeing any problem lights on my dash. The developer said, "... for some unknown reason some BMWs trip the CEL and others do not."
