Mein Auto: a cranky 535i from 89
opening locks when battery dead

Hi: I have an 89 535i. I also thought that my car was different, when several different attempts over different days at turning the darned key didn't open the door.

I think the instructions from the e34 page you cited are correct, you just have to keep wiggling and pressing the key to the side they indicate (I always attempt the driver door, but I think it works on the passenger door). When it finally wiggles the lock up, it doesn't feel very german or precise - in fact it feels a lot like a lock on an escort giving in to brute force!

By the way, my car was running the battery down overnight, which we only solved when we noticed the locks were getting hot. We opened the door and disconnected the heater unit switch and now the car is fine.

you need to SEARCH!!!

you will find tons of info.
If you turn key and they lock, then unlock, it is a wiring issue, likely in the trunk.
But you will find all the answeres, have a look
